Orson Scott Card Bio and Career:

American author Orson Scott Card is well known for his science fiction writing. He is now the only author to have received the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award in back-to-back years for his books Ender’s Game and its sequel Speaker for the Dead. 2013 saw the release of Ender’s Game feature film, which Card co-produced. Additionally, Card is the author of The Tales of Alvin Maker, winner of a Locus Fantasy Award. On August 24, 1951, Orson Scott Card was born in Richland, Washington.

He is the elder brother of composer and arranger Arlen Card and the third of six children of Peggy Jane and Willard Richards Card. Card’s ancestors were pioneer Mormons. Brigham Young, Charles Ora Card, Zina P. Young Card, Zina Young Card Brown, and Hugh B. Brown are among his immediate ancestors. Card wed Kristine Allen, the spouse of Mormon historian James B. Allen, in 1977. Kristine was in the chorus of a roadshow that Card directed before his mission, which is how the two first connected. Following Card’s assignment, they started dating, and Card was taken aback by her intellectual rigor.

After being married, they had five kids; their daughter Erin passed on the day she was born, and their son Charles, who had cerebral palsy and died at age 17, had died at a young age. Although a fictitious kid dies in author Orson Scott Card’s profoundly autobiographical short novel Lost Boys. Card feigned feeling the anguish of a parent who had lost a kid, according to Karen Fowler, one of Card’s workshop readers. Card responded by realizing that the tale had captured his sorrow and his inability to accept Charles’ condition. Card said that since his pain has not subsided with time, he seldom talks about Charles and Erin.

Card and his wife reside in Greensboro, North Carolina, and their daughter Emily co-wrote Posing as People, a theatrical adaptation of Clap Hands and Sing, Lifeloop, and A Sepulchre of Songs, three of Card’s short tales. The card had a minor stroke on January 1, 2011, but recovered well. In order for Willard Card to start a sign-painting company, his family relocated to San Mateo, California, when Card was only one month old. The family relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah, when he was three years old so that his father could complete his bachelor’s degree.

When Card was six years old, his family relocated to Santa Clara, California, where they remained for seven years while Card’s father finished his master’s degree and worked as a professor at San Jose State College. Card attended gifted education courses at school but was more interested in learning music since he played the clarinet and French horn. He read a broad variety of books, including classic literature, nonfiction, and historical fiction. He penned his first narrative at the age of 10, which was about an intellectual kid who is bullied and suffers brain damage. This incident served as the inspiration for Ender’s fight with Stilson in Ender’s Game.

The card worked as an LDS Church missionary in Brazil beginning in 1971 before receiving his degree. He composed a play called Stone Tables while on his expedition.  After serving a mission in 1973, he returned to BYU and earned a theatrical bachelor’s degree with distinction in 1975. After receiving his degree, he founded the Utah Valley Repertory Theatre Company, which for two summers staged plays in “the Castle,” a park amphitheater built during the Great Depression.

Card accepted a part-time position as a proofreader at BYU Press before transitioning to a full-time position as a copy editor after falling into debt due to the costs of the community theatre.  Card finished his master’s degree in English in 1981 at the University of Utah, where he took classes with Norman Council and François Camoin. At the University of Notre Dame, he started a Ph.D. degree before quitting to focus on his more lucrative writing jobs.

The card often employs genre fiction motifs in his writing; his works were inspired by classic literature, popular fantasy, and science fiction. The card has made his writing more approachable because of his experience as a screenwriter. Though innovative, Card’s early literature involves severe violence. Characters with remarkable abilities who face risky decisions are a common theme in his writing. In his articles and other work, Card has also included political, religious, and social criticism. Card’s hostility to homosexuality has drawn criticism from the general people.

Card, who was born in Richland, Washington, and grew up in California and Utah, is a great-great-grandson of Brigham Young. His plays were staged when he was a student at Brigham Young University. He led a community theatre for two summers while working as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil. Card received the John W. Campbell Award for a best new writer in 1978 and had 27 short stories published between 1978 and 1979. In the 1980s, after receiving a master’s in English from the University of Utah, he published books in the science fiction, fantasy, non-fiction, and historical fiction genres. Card kept up his prolific writing and produced over 45 short stories and 50 books.

The card is an English professor at Southern Virginia University, the author of two books on creative writing, and a writer of the future contest judge. He has mentored several successful authors at his “writing boot camps” and is an active member of the LDS Church. His writings have been regarded as a significant influence by Mormon novelists Dave Wolverton, Brandon Sanderson, and Stephenie Meyer.

Orson Scott Card Phone Number, Email, Contact Information, House Address, and Social Profiles:

Card and his family relocated to Mesa, Arizona, in 1964, where he took part in debate simulations as a junior in high school. His father taught at Brigham Young University in Orem, Utah, where the family relocated in 1967. Card studied at the BYU laboratory school, where he completed his one-year degree by taking courses at the high school and early college levels. When he first started college, he planned to study anthropology, but as his passion for theatre grew, he started writing scripts instead. He wrote ten original plays and revised plays by other students. One of his plays was science fiction, but most of them were based on Mormon history and scripture.

He was able to discern whether an audience was engaged in his scripts by observing their body language. While majoring in theatre, he started composing one-act and full-length plays, adapting literature for reader’s theatre productions, and doctoring screenplays. A number of these pieces were presented by faculty directors at BYU. Card’s playwriting instructor, Charles W. Whitman, pushed his pupils to create plays with LDS themes.  At BYU, Card studied poetry under Clinton F. Larson. [10] He also produced short fiction, which was afterward collected as The Worthing Saga.
