John le Carré Bio and Career:

David John Moore Cornwell, well known by his pen name John le Carré, was a British author best known for his spy novels. He lived from October 19, 1931, until December 12, 2020. He served in both the Security Service and the Secret Intelligence Service during the 1950s and 1960s.  The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, his third book, is still one of his best-known works and a global best-seller. Nicholas le Carré claims that soon before he passed away, le Carré converted to Irish citizenship while keeping his British citizenship. On October 19, 1931, David John Moore Cornwell was born in Poole, Dorset, England.  His mother Olive Moore Cornwell, and father Ronald Thomas Archibald  Cornwell were his parents. Tony, his older brother, played county cricket for Dorset and worked as an advertising executive from 1929 to 2017.

Tony later settled in the US.  His younger half-brother Rupert Cornwell was a former Washington bureau chief for The Independent, and his younger half-sister Charlotte Cornwell was an actress.  When Cornwell was 21 years old, his uncle, Liberal MP Alec Glassey, gave him his mother’s Ipswich address. Since his mother had left their home when he was five years old, Cornwell had few early memories of her. 16 years after their first meeting, at his mother’s written request in response to Cornwell’s initial letter of reconciliation, they reconnected on the Ipswich train platform.

Call for the Dead and A Murder of Quality, Le Carré’s first two books, are mystery novels. Both books follow George Smiley, a retired spy, as he looks into a death: in the first, the apparent suicide of a suspected communist, and in the second, a slaying in a boys’ public school. Smiley’s motivations are more personal than political, despite the fact that Call for the Dead develops into an espionage tale.  Le Carré quit MI6 after the publication of his third book,

The Spy Who Came In from the Cold, went on to become a worldwide bestseller and remains one of his best-known works. Alec Leamas, the protagonist of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, is usually seen by audiences as a tragic hero, despite le Carré’s intention to portray espionage as morally flawed in the book. Le Carré responded by writing The Looking Glass War, a satire about an increasingly dangerous espionage mission that ultimately serves no purpose.

The Cold War is the setting for the majority of le Carré’s espionage novels, which depict British Intelligence operatives as unheroic political functionaries conscious of the moral ambiguities of their employment and more interested in psychological than physical drama.

The novels highlight the frailty of Western democracy and the covert agencies tasked with defending it, frequently hinting at the prospect of east-west moral parity.  They hardly ever engage in the kind of violence found in action thrillers, and they rarely use technology. Instead of being obvious and external, the battle is largely inside. Le Carré created George Smiley as an “antidote” to James Bond, whom he referred to as “an international gangster” rather than a spy and believed should be left out of the canon of spy fiction. George Smiley appears in five of le Carré’s novels as the main character and four more as a supporting character.  In contrast, he envisioned Smiley, an obese, bespectacled bureaucrat who used guile and persuasion to his advantage, as a realistic representation of a spy.

Smiley was brought back as the main character in the sprawling espionage saga depicting his attempts to first find a mole in the Circus and then to entrap his Soviet rival and counterpart, code-named Karla, in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Honourable Schoolboy, and Smiley’s People. The trilogy was initially intended to be a multi-part series in which Smiley would send operatives to pursue Karla across the globe. The last time Smiley served as the main character in a le Carré story was in Smiley’s People, though he returned in The Secret Pilgrim and A Legacy of Spies.

The author’s most autobiographical espionage book, A Perfect Spy, details Magnus Pym’s moral upbringing and how it prepares him to become a spy. It reflects the boy’s extremely close bond with his con-man father. The novelist’s own father, Ronnie Cornwell, is characterized by biographer LynnDianne Beene as “an epic con man of little education, enormous charm, lavish interests, but no social ideals.” Writing A Perfect Spy, Le Carré thought, “is probably what a really wise psychotherapist would have advised.” The Naive and Sentimental Lover, a semi-autobiographical book he also authored in 1971, tells the tale of a man’s existential crisis in middle age.

Cornwell’s father was a known accomplice of the Kray twins and had previously served time in prison for insurance fraud. The household was perpetually in debt. It has been said that the father-son relationship is “tough.”  Ronnie served as the model for Rick Pym, a cunning con artist and the father of Magnus Pym, the main character of A Perfect Spy. A theme from A Perfect Spy is that when Cornwell’s father passed away in 1975, he paid for a memorial service but did not go. St Andrew’s Preparatory School in Pangbourne, Berkshire, served as Cornwell’s first school, while Sherborne School served as his second.

Cornwell joined MI6, the foreign intelligence service, in 1960 and began working as the British Embassy’s Second Secretary in Bonn. He eventually moved to Hamburg as a political consul. Le Carré is French for “the square,” and he published two detective novels there under that name, A Murder of Quality and The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. He had to use a pseudonym since employees of the Foreign Office were not allowed to write under their own names.

Le Carré’s career as an intelligence officer came to an end in 1964 as a result of Kim Philby, the famed British double agent and one of the Cambridge Five, revealing the identities of British spies to the KGB. In Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Le Carré portrayed and analyzed Philby as the upper-class traitor being chased by George Smiley and given the KGB pseudonym “Gerald”. He left MI6 to pursue writing full-time after The Spy Who Came in from the Cold became a bestseller.

He grew weary of the then-standardly strict English public school curriculum and despised his strict housemaster. In order to study foreign languages at the University of Bern from 1948 to 1949, he left Sherborne early.  He was enlisted for National Service in 1950 and served in the British Army’s Intelligence Corps garrisoned in Allied-occupied Austria, where he conducted German-language interrogations of those who had escaped the Iron Curtain and traveled to the West.

He returned to England in 1952 to enroll in Lincoln College, Oxford, where he secretly spied on far-left organizations for the British Security Service, MI5, to learn more about potential Soviet spies. He belonged to The Goblin Club, a campus eating organization, while he was a student.

Cornwell left Oxford to work at Millfield Preparatory School in 1954 after his father was declared bankrupt; However, he returned to Oxford a year later and earned a first-class degree in modern languages in 1956. After two years of teaching French and German at Eton College, he joined MI5 as an officer in 1958.  He oversaw the activities of his agents and carried out interrogations, phone taps, and break-ins.

While still a serving MI5 officer, Lord Clanmorris, who published mystery novels under the pen name “John Bingham,” inspired Cornwell to start penning Call for the Dead. Lord Clanmorris and Vivian H. H. Green were the two people who Cornwell used as models for George Smiley, the spymaster of the Circus. When Green was the Chaplain and Assistant Master at Sherborne School, Cornwell first had contact with the latter as a young student. After Green transferred to Lincoln College and began tutoring Cornwell there, the friendship persisted.
