Martin Truex Jr. Bio and Career:

Martin Lee Truex Jr., an American stock car racing driver, was born on June 29, 1980. He participates in the NASCAR Cup Series on a full-time basis, piloting the No. 19 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing. In addition to becoming the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series winner, he has also won the Xfinity Series twice, in 2004 and 2005. Martin Truex Jr., the racer’s son, started his racing career at Central New Jersey’s New Egypt Speedway when it was still a paved track, running go-karts. When Truex Jr. reached the legal driving age of 18 in 1998, he switched to the Modified category at Wall Stadium.

At Dover International Speedway in 2001, Truex made his debut Busch Series start driving his father’s No. 56 Chevrolet. After a collision early on, he fell from 19th place to 38th place. Truex started 13th and finished 29th in a single race for Phoenix Racing at the New Hampshire International Speedway in 2002. The remainder of the season, he competed in three races for his father, with his best result coming in at Dover. In the Nextel Cup Series in 2006, Truex switched to the No. 1 DEI Chevy full-time. He placed 19th in points and had two Top 5 finishes. In the NASCAR Nextel All-Star Open, Truex earned his first victory of the 2007 campaign.

This victory qualified him for the 2007 Nextel All-Star Challenge, where he placed eighth. Following the 2009 campaign, Truex moved Earnhardt Ganassi Racing to race for Michael Waltrip Racing in the No. 56 Toyota Camry, earning owner points from the No. 55 vehicle that was originally piloted by Waltrip. Martin’s father raced with the No. 56, which is known as the “family number,” when he competed in the Grand National Division. In the Daytona 500, which it was his debut race for Michael Waltrip Racing, Truex came in sixth.

He dropped to 24th in the point standings after a string of misfortunes over the next three weeks with blown engines and crashes, but he rose to 13th in the next seven races after placing in the Top 12 five times and all Top 19 finishes. He won the sixth pole of his career at Dover. Truex finished second in the All-Star Race after starting 19th out of 21 after winning the All-Star Showdown in Charlotte, earning him the first transfer position. With one Top 5 result and seven Top 10 finishes, Truex went on to complete the 2010 season in 22nd place overall in the point standings.

At Martinsville the next year in 2011, a jammed throttle forced Truex and Kasey Kahne to collide, resulting in a significant accident; Truex impacted the wall hard head-on and his vehicle briefly caught fire while Kahne struck the wall in the back of his car. Kahne earned a standing ovation when he walked out unharmed, and Truex immediately stepped out and rushed to check on him.

Then, Truex departed with authorities for the care facility. Both Truex and Kahne were discharged with typical symptoms, according to him, and the accident was the worst of his career. Officials informed him that his accident was the most serious one at Martinsville the following week. At Dover International Raceway, Truex once again took the pole. Truex performed well in the majority of the races, although he often had trouble finishing them.

Due to a windshield infraction in the autumn Talladega race, he has been penalized 25 points. He finished the season with 18 points, three Top 5 finishes, and 12 Top 10 finishes. A few weeks later, he won the Autism Speaks 400, becoming the first driver in the Sprint Cup Series to do so. Despite leading 219 of the 400 laps, he had a seven-second advantage over pole-sitter Ryan Newman.

On his approach to winning that title, Truex filled in for Dale Earnhardt Jr., who had sustained burns in a sports car accident, in the Nextel Cup Series. Later that year, at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Truex began the first Cup race of his career for Dale Earnhardt, Inc, qualifying 33rd and finishing 37th.

Truex continued to compete in the Busch Series in 2005, earning the championship for the second consecutive year. In addition to defending his victories at Talladega and Dover International Speedway, he triumphed in Mexico’s inaugural Busch Series points race to be run outside of the United States. On July 1, 2005, he achieved his first victory at Daytona International Speedway.

Truex relocated to the south in 2000, renting a house in Mooresville, North Carolina, from Dale Earnhardt Jr. He then bought his own house in Mooresville. He started competing in the Busch North Series, following in the footsteps of his father. He played for three whole seasons and started a few games in 2003. Driving the No. 56 SeaWatch Chevy, owned by his family, Truex collected 13 pole positions and 5 victories.

Many of Truex Jr.’s relatives are active or former NASCAR racers. Ryan, his younger brother, is a two-time consecutive champion in what is now the ARCA Menards Series East and races full-time in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for Niece Motorsports. In the 1990s, his father Martin Sr. participated in the East Series on a full-time basis. In the 1980s, his uncle Barney participated sporadically in the Whelen Modified Tour.  Curtis Truex Jr. and Tyler Truex, two of his cousins, race late-model cars.

He moved up to 13th in the standings as a result of this triumph, which was followed by third- and second-place finishes at Pocono Raceway and Michigan. Truex qualified for his first Chase for the Sprint Cup with a 15th-place performance in the Chevy Rock and Roll 400, and he ended the season in 11th position in terms of points. In 2008, he did not reach victory lane, but he did record 11 Top 10 finishes and came in 15th place in the points standings.

Before being given the No. 81 Chance 2 Motorsports Chevy by Dale Earnhardt Jr., he started the 2003 season with his father’s organization. At Richmond International Raceway, where he made his debut with Chance 2, he qualified sixth and led 11 laps until a mechanical issue caused him to finish 31st.

For the remainder of the season, he alternated his time between Chance 2 and his father’s squad, with the exception of Dover, when he drove for Stanton Barrett. At Bristol Motor Speedway, he finished sixth, and he finished the season with two straight second-place results. In all, he participated in eleven races that year.

In 2004, Truex raced continuously for Chance 2. He won the first race of his career at Bristol Motor Speedway, and over the next seven races, he added three more triumphs. This would include victories at Nazareth Speedway’s last NASCAR race and the restrictor plate race at Talladega Superspeedway, ending the run of Busch Series victories for his car owner.

After Nazareth, he assumed the championship lead until losing it to rookie Kyle Busch a few races later. Truex was able to distance himself from Busch in the second part of the season thanks to a string of Top 5 and Top 10 finishes, winning the Busch Series title with one race remaining.
