John F. MacArthur Bio and Career:
American Protestant pastor and author John Fullerton MacArthur Jr. were born on June 19, 1939. He is best known for his worldwide syndicated Christian teaching radio and television show Grace to You. Since February 9, 1969, he has served as the pastor of Grace Community Church, a nondenominational church in Sun Valley, California. He presently serves as the emeritus chancellor of The Master’s University and The Master’s Seminary in Santa Clarita. MacArthur was born in Los Angeles.
He was the grandson of Canadian Anglican clergyman Harry MacArthur and the son of Baptist radio preacher Jack MacArthur and Irene Dockendorf. Pastor MacArthur claimed in a 1979 interview that he is “distantly connected to General Douglas MacArthur.” I realize that I’m a fifth cousin, so it’s quite a distance, but we are connected, he said.
MacArthur enrolled at the fundamentalist Bob Jones College from 1957 to 1959, following in his father’s footsteps. After taking a year off, he was admitted to Los Angeles Pacific College of the Free Methodist Church in 1960. During his final year there, he watched two football games and participated in one play on the field. He received a Master of Divinity degree with honors in 1963 from the Bible Institute of Los Angeles’ brand-new Talbot Theological Seminary in La Mirada, California.
In Burbank, California, where his father Jack had built and named the Harry MacArthur Memorial Bible Church after his own father, MacArthur was employed by his father as an assistant pastor from 1964 to 1966. MacArthur served as Talbot Theological Seminary’s faculty representative from 1966 until 1969. He was appointed as the third and youngest pastor of the interdenominational Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, on February 9, 1969. An extremely elevated perspective of the Bible is fundamental to MacArthur’s theology. Because it is “the Word of God” and God cannot lie, he believes that the Bible is infallible and without error.
Additionally, he thinks that we must fully submit to Scripture above everything else and that “Misusing the Bible is the same as misrepresenting the author of it. To deny its assertions is to accuse Him of lying. Its message is one that the Holy Spirit inspired, and to disregard it is to reject it.” As a cessationist, MacArthur believes that the “sign gifts” mentioned in the Bible were given to the apostles for a limited time in order to confirm the inspiration and veracity of the scriptures and that by the end of the Apostolic Age, these gifts had fulfilled their intended function and ceased to be given.
He is one of the most vocal opponents of Pentecostalism and the Charismatic Movement’s continuation claims that God still bestows sign gifts on people today in American Christianity. On the topic, MacArthur has authored three volumes. His church held the “Strange Fire” conference in October 2013 to coincide with the publication of the book of the same name. Several speakers who supported cessationist theology and harshly criticized the Charismatic Movement were present at the gathering. According to MacArthur, “you will be saved if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God resurrected Him from the dead”.
In the 1980s, Arminians started to refer to this acceptance of Jesus as Lord upon coming to trust in Him as the “Lordship salvation dispute.” According to MacArthur, the doctrine of free grace cannot exist without people confessing Jesus Christ as their Lord. To be really saved, according to Peter 2:20, “you must accept Jesus Christ for who He is, both Lord and Savior.” He claims that everlasting security is: “Never should the message be that once you’re saved, you’re always saved, regardless of what you think or do.
Hebrews 12:14 makes it clear that only those who continue to live pure lives will be admitted into the Lord’s presence.” The non-lordship dispensationalist theologians Charles Ryrie and Zane C. Hodges, who claimed that MacArthur’s ministry was promoting a sort of works-based salvation, questioned these beliefs in literature, causing conflict within American evangelicalism. When requested to “reason together with the IFCA guy,” MacArthur was asked to certify on two recordings that were made in 1989 that he refuted the accusation.
In 2019, MacArthur was given the prompt “Beth Moore” during a word association quiz at the Truth Matters Conference. “Go home,” MacArthur said in response. He continued by restating his position on 1 Timothy 2:12: “Biblically speaking, there is no support for female preachers. Period. Paragraph. Discussion over.” Moore reacted to this viewpoint on her Twitter account by writing, “When I was 18 years old, I did not give in to a calling of man. I gave succumbed to a divine calling. I never think twice about not carrying it out.”
The four-year Christian liberal arts institution Los Angeles Baptist College, currently known as The Master’s University, appointed MacArthur as its president in 1985. He was appointed president of the brand-new Master’s Seminary in 1986.
On June 5, 2011, MacArthur finished preaching through the whole of the New Testament, except the last chapters of Mark, some 43 years after first entering the pulpit of Grace Community.
Expository preaching is something that MacArthur strongly supports, and Christianity Today has named him one of the most significant preachers of our day. More than 150 publications have been authored or edited by MacArthur, including the MacArthur Study Bible, which has sold more than a million copies and won a Gold Medallion Book Award.

During the COVID-19 worldwide crisis in 2020 and 2021, MacArthur disobeyed instructions from public health authorities in Los Angeles County regarding services at Grace Community Church and stated that no members of the church had become critically sick, despite evidence to the contrary.
His main argument was that, according to incorrectly interpreted statistics from the United States Centers for Illness Control and Prevention, there was no basis for shutting down churches due to a disease with a 94% survival rate. He said that, in contrast to physical death, a more deadly virus—the infection of sin—was killing people and consigning millions to everlasting death.
Los Angeles County filed a lawsuit against the church for refusing to shut down, and the church responded by filing a lawsuit of its own, charging the County with breaching its right to freedom of religion. MacArthur informed the congregation in August 2021 that he and his wife were among the “many persons” who caught COVID-19 as it “went through” the church in December 2020 and January 2021. Ultimately, all legal disputes were resolved outside of court with Grace Community Church receiving $400,000 from both the County of Los Angeles and the State of California.
In the words of MacArthur, “visions, revelations, voices from heaven…dreams, speaking in tongues, prophecies, out-of-body experiences, trip to heaven, anointings, miracles – all false, all lies, all deceptions – attributed falsely to the Holy Spirit” are all false, all lies, all deceptions in modern times. The Charismatic movement, he has said, “has stolen the Holy Spirit and manufactured a golden calf, and they’re dancing around the golden calf as if it were the Holy Spirit.”
The Grace media team developed MacArthur’s daily radio and television show, Grace to You, to promote sermon audio cassettes. It was initially aired in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1977 and is now heard all over the globe.
