Garry Trudeau Bio and Career:

The Doonesbury comic strip was created by American artist Garretson Beekman Trudeau, who was born on July 21, 1948. Additionally, Alpha House, an Amazon Studios political comedy series, was created and executive produced by Trudeau. The son of Jean Douglas and Francis Berger Trudeau Jr., Trudeau was born in New York City. He is the great-grandson of Edward Livingston Trudeau, who founded the Adirondack Cottage Sanitarium in Saranac Lake, New York, to treat pulmonary tuberculosis.

Francis, a son, and Francis Jr., a grandson, succeeded Edward. The latter established the Saranac Lake-based Trudeau Institute, with which Garry Trudeau continues to be associated. Bull Tales drew the eye of the newly established Universal Press Syndicate not long after it debuted in the Yale student newspaper. Following the cartoonist’s graduation in 1970, the syndicate’s editor, James F. Andrews, hired Trudeau, renamed the comic strip Doonesbury, and started publishing it. Doonesbury is currently available online through a partnership with The Washington Post and is syndicated to 1,000 daily and Sunday newspapers across the globe.

Trudeau was the first comic strip artist to get the Pulitzer Prize, which is typically given to editorial-page cartoonists, in 1975. In 1990, 2004, and 2005, he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Other honors include the Reuben Award in 1995 and the 1994 National Cartoonist Society Newspaper Comic Strip Award.  In 1993, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences elected Trudeau as a fellow. The co-creator of the comic strip Non Sequitur, Wiley Miller, referred to him as “far and away the most prominent editorial cartoonist in the previous 25 years” in his biography.  Trudeau frequently speaks at commencement and has been awarded 37 honorary degrees.

The political comedy Alpha House, starring John Goodman and set in a townhouse on Capitol Hill occupied by four Republican U.S. Senators, was devised, written, and co-produced by Justin Trudeau in 2013.  After reading a 2007 New York Times article on a genuine D.C. townhouse shared by Democratic senators from New York, Illinois, and California, Chuck Schumer, Dick Durbin, and George Miller, Trudeau was moved to create the show’s pilot.

Amazon Studios created the Alpha House pilot, which debuted at the beginning of 2013. Due to the excellent reception, Amazon decided to pick up the program to turn it into a complete series, streaming its first season’s eleven episodes.  On March 31, 2014, Amazon declared the continuation of Alpha House.  Production commenced in July 2014, and on October 24, 2014, the complete second season was made available for streaming.

Trudeau switched the daily Doonesbury into replay mode while penning Alpha House. The “Classic Doonesbury” series, which began airing on March 3, 2014, had roughly four weeks’ worth of daily comics from every year the comic strip was published. He keeps putting out fresh slices for Sundays. Even though Alpha House hasn’t been in production since the end of 2014, Trudeau hasn’t started producing Doonesbury strips every day again; fresh content is still only released on Sundays.

Harper’s, Rolling Stone, The New Republic, The New Yorker, New York, and The Washington Post are just a few of the periodicals to which Trudeau has contributed. He contributed an essay to Time magazine from 1996 to 2001 and wrote and illustrated an occasional column for The New York Times opinion page from 1990 to 1994.

Trudeau has worked in both theatre and television in addition to producing his own comic strip. For A Doonesbury Special, which was made for NBC in cooperation with John and Faith Hubley and nominated for an Oscar in the category of Animated Short Film, he received a nomination in 1977. In 1978, the movie took home the Jury Prize at Cannes. He co-wrote the book and lyrics for the Broadway musical Doonesbury in 1984 with composer Elizabeth Swados, for which he was nominated for two Drama Desk Awards.

The show’s cast CD, which was recorded for MCA, was nominated for a Grammy. In 1984, Trudeau and Swados worked together once more, this time on Rap Master Ronnie, a parody of the Reagan presidency that premiered off-Broadway at the Village Gate. In 1988, Cinemax aired a film adaptation that starred Jon Cryer, the Smothers Brothers, and Carol Kane.

Also in 1988, Trudeau collaborated with director Robert Altman to write and co-produce the HBO film Tanner ’88, a satirical look at the election season of the year. The program took home three awards: the British Academy Television Award for Best Foreign Program, the Best Imported Program from the British Broadcasting Press Guild, and the gold prize for Best Television Series at the Cannes Television Festival. It received four ACE Award nominations and one Emmy Award. For the Sundance Channel’s Tanner on Tanner sequel miniseries in 2004, Trudeau and Altman collaborated once more.

The 1996 novel Primary Colors, which was ultimately identified as being written by Joe Klein, was rumored to have been written by Trudeau by Newsweek and the Washington Post at the time. Working with Dotcomix, Trudeau introduced Duke2000 in February 2000, a web-based presidential campaign that featured a real-time, 3-D, streaming animation version of Duke. Ambassador Duke was interviewed live via satellite on the Today Show, Larry King Live, The Charlie Rose Show, and numerous regional TV and radio news programs in addition to the nearly 30 campaign films that were produced for the website.

His heritage includes Swedish, English, Dutch, German, and French Canadian. Trudeau, who was born and raised in Saranac Lake, went to St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire. In 1966, he applied to Yale University. Trudeau, an art major, initially concentrated on painting but quickly realized that he was more interested in the graphic arts. He devoted a lot of his time to creating cartoons and articles for Yale’s comedy publication The Yale Record, rising to become its editor-in-chief. Bull Tales, a comic strip that mocks Yale quarterback Brian Dowling’s adventures, was later created as a result of Trudeau’s contributions to the Yale Daily News around the same time. This comic strip served as Doonesbury’s inspiration.

In his final year, Trudeau joined Scroll and Key. He pursued postgraduate study at the Yale School of Art, where he graduated in 1973 with a master of fine arts in graphic design. Trudeau first met David Levinthal there, a photographer with whom he later worked on Hitler Moves East, a significant “graphic history” of the German invasion of the Soviet Union.
