Clive Barker Bio and Career:

Clive Barker, an English novelist, playwright, author, director of films, and visual artist, was born on October 5, 1952. He first gained notoriety in the middle of the 1980s with a collection of short stories called the Books of Blood, which established him as a major horror author. Since then, he has produced numerous novels and other things. Films based on his fiction have been made, most notably the Candyman and Hellraiser series, the first of which he created and directed. In addition, he served as the film’s executive producer. Gods and Monsters received the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. The son of Leonard Barker, a personnel director for an industrial relations agency, and Joan Ruby (née Revill), a painter and school welfare worker, Barker was born in Liverpool.

At the University of Liverpool, where he studied English and philosophy, he received his education at Dovedale Primary School, Quarry Bank High School, and other institutions. When his writing did not make enough money in his early years as a writer, Barker occasionally worked as a prostitute. Screenplays by Barker were written for the George Pavlou-directed films Underworld and Rawhead Rex. He moved into filmmaking with Hellraiser, which was based on his book The Hellbound Heart, since he was unhappy with the way his material had been handled. After the failure of his 1990 feature Nightbreed, Barker went back to write and direct Lord of Illusions. The 1992 film Candyman and its three sequels were based on the short tale “The Forbidden” from Clive Barker’s Books of Blood.

Under the direction of The Walt Disney Company, he was working on a number of cinematic adaptations of his The Abarat Quintet books, but the project was shelved because of artistic disputes. Variety claimed in May 2015 that Clive Barker was working with Warner Brothers to create a television series called Clive Barker’s Creepypastas that will adapt several creepypastas, including those based on Slender Man and Ben Drowned. Barker worked on the 2020 streaming service movie adaptation of The Books of Blood, and he is currently creating a SyFy Nightbreed television series under the direction of Michael Dougherty and with a script by Josh Stolberg.

The Hellraiser television series, which would be “an elevated continuation and development” of its mythology, was announced by HBO in April 2020. Mark Verheiden and Michael Dougherty would write the show, and David Gordon Green would helm a number of the episodes. Along with Danny McBride, Jody Hill, Brandon James, and Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, Verheiden, Dougherty, and Green will also serve as the series’ executive producers. Barker is a prolific visual artist who frequently uses his own books as illustrations.

In the early 1990s, Fantastico released Dread, his official fan club magazine. Later, his drawings appeared on the covers of Incarnations and Forms of Heaven, collections of his plays, and the second printing of the first British editions of his Books of Blood series. In addition, Barker created the illustrations for the Abarat series and his young adult book The Thief of Always. The Bess Cutler Gallery in New York, Bert Green Fine Art in Los Angeles and Chicago, and La Luz De Jesus in Los Angeles have all featured his artwork. Many of his drawings and paintings may be seen in the collections Clive Barker, Illustrator, which Arcane/Eclipse Books released in 1990, and Visions of Heaven and Hell, which Rizzoli Books published in 2005.

The semi-fictional account of Frankenstein filmmaker James Whale’s latter years, Gods and Monsters, which received an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1998, had him as an executive producer. Regarding his interest in the project, Barker stated: “Whale was gay, and I am also; Whale was English, and I am too. I’ve done some horror films, and Whale has made some as well. I felt obligated to contribute to the telling of this tale.” Barker wrote the foreword for the shooting script that was published.

With the goal of making two horror movies annually, Barker and horror movie producer Jorge Saralegui founded the production firm Midnight Picture Show in 2005. The upcoming remake of the original Hellraiser movie will be written by Barker, who made the announcement on his website in October 2006. Based on his Tortured Souls toy line from McFarlane Toys, he is creating a movie.

At the 15th GLAAD Media Awards in 2003, he was presented with the Davidson/Valentini Award. Despite his criticism of organized religion, Barker has acknowledged that the Bible has an impact on his creativity and spirituality. After Ann Coulter suggested he wasn’t a Christian in a 2003 appearance on Politically Incorrect, he declared that he was even though he later claimed on Facebook that he did not identify as a Christian.
