Ernest Christy Cline is an American science fiction author, slam poet, and screenwriter who was born on March 29, 1972. He co-wrote the screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One adaptation as well as the books Ready Player One, Armada, and Ready Player Two. The son of Ernest Christy Cline and Faye Imogene Cline, Cline was born and reared in Ashland, Ohio.  Cline was “obsessed with video games and movies” as a young person in the 1970s and 1980s, including Star Wars, John Hughes films, and the tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons.

In his twenties, he worked in information technology and spent his free time producing screenplays. Based on a plot he had created in the late 1990s as his mother was dying of cancer, Cline co-wrote the script for Fanboys. Harry Knowles, who had ties in the film business, helped Cline get the movie made by sharing his script draught with him and having Cline shoot some of the low-budget sequences himself.

Adam F. Goldberg and Kyle Newman collaborated on writing and directing the finished movie. After several delays, reshoots, and reedits, it was ultimately released in 2009. Later, Cline said that the movie “completely altered my life. My first really original script, Fanboys, was produced.” Cline gave readings of his own works at Austin Poetry Slam locations from 1997 through 2001.

He participated on the Austin Poetry Slam Teams in the 1998 Austin National Poetry Slam and the 2001 Seattle National Poetry Slam and won the Austin Poetry Slam title in 1998 and 2001, respectively. The songs “Dance, Monkeys, Dance,” “Nerd Porn Auteur,” and “When I Was a Kid” are among his most well-known spoken word performances.  The song “Dance Monkeys Dance” was then adapted by Cline into a fictitious instructional filmstrip, which turned into a viral video that has now been translated into 29 other languages.

Ready Player One, Cline’s first book, which is set in a dystopian future version of the 2040s, was published in June 2010. The Crown Publishing Group won the auction for the book after competing for it. The next day, Warner Bros. purchased the rights to adapt the book into a movie, with Cline co-writing the script.

Cline announced on his blog that both the paperback and hardback copies of Ready Player One feature an intricately disguised Easter egg ten months after the hardcover edition’s publication, which coincided with the paperback edition’s release. This hint was the first of a series of simulated video game tests that followed the novel’s premise. Cline also disclosed that a 1981 DeLorean will be the competition’s top prize. 2012 saw the awarding of the prize. There have been 17 printings of the paperback so far.
