Dwayne Woodruff Bio and Career:

Dwayne Donzell Woodruff was born on February 18, 1957, and is now a judge. He is also a former professional American football player who spent twelve seasons as a cornerback with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he amassed 37 interceptions after being taken in the sixth round in 1979. Woodruff’s career began when the Steelers selected him in the sixth round. He earned a Super Bowl ring with the Steelers when they defeated the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl XIV while he was only a rookie.

In addition to his career in football, Woodruff has a law degree and serves as a judge in the Allegheny County Common Pleas Court in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After playing college football for the University of Louisville – Cardinals, Woodruff was selected in the sixth round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the year 1979. In September 1979, he debuted with the Steelers in the National Football League. That season, he participated in all 16 games and had two interceptions in the playoffs, both of which were critical in the Steelers’ run to Super Bowl XIV.

With five interceptions in 1982, Woodruff led the Steelers in that category, which helped him finish tied for first place in the AFC and contributed to the club’s nomination of him as the Most Valuable Player for that year’s squad. One of the game-changing interceptions came in the extra period of the AFC matchup between the Bengals of Cincinnati and the Ravens of Baltimore. The throw intended for quarterback Ken Anderson was intercepted by Woodruff, who then ran it back 30 yards to the 2-yard line. On the next play, Terry Bradshaw fired the game-winning touchdown pass to John Stallworth from 2 yards out.

Woodruff was a notable defensive player with the Steelers and led or co-led the team in interceptions on five occasions (1982, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1989). He now ranks fifth on the Steelers’ all-time list of interception leaders with 37 total picks. In addition to that, he has a spot on the all-time Steelers record for interceptions. They returned for touchdowns with three, the largest of which was a score of 78 yards against the Miami Dolphins in December 1988. This score gave the Steelers a 7–0 lead and helped spark their victory by 40–24.

In addition, throughout his career, Woodruff successfully recovered four fumbles. One of these recoveries was a fumble that was returned 65 yards for a touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons in October 1984. The Steelers went on to defeat the Falcons 34–14. In a game against the Miami Dolphins in November 1989, Woodruff recovered a fumble by Carnell Lake that was lateraled to him for 21 yards and a touchdown, tying the score at 14–14. The Steelers went on to win the game 34-14.

During his time in the National Football League, Woodruff attended Duquesne University School of Law and earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1988. He then became an associate attorney at the Meyer Darragh law firm, achieving the unheard-of distinction of concurrently practicing law while playing in the NFL for three years.

In 1997, he joined the legal company that would later be known as Flaherty Fardo, LLC, located in Shadyside in Pittsburgh. At the time, Woodruff & Flaherty, P.C. Woodruff has served as a judge in the Court of Common Pleas in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, since he was elected to that position in 2005. Most of his cases have been heard in the Family Court Division for ten years.

In November 2014, Woodruff made public his intention to run for a seat on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. However, he was ultimately defeated in the primary election held in May 2015. However, he won re-election to the Court of Common Pleas for a second, ten-year term in the general election in November 2015, leading the slate of all eight judges who were up for retention with the highest vote totals. His next tour will begin in November 2025.

Both Woodruff and his wife Joy are chairpersons of Pittsburgh’s “Do The Write Thing” organization.

The National Campaign to Stop Violence (NCSV) is responsible for implementing this initiative as part of its Initiatives. As part of the Do the Write Thing Challenge, middle school students are allowed to investigate violence’s influence on their lives by participating in classroom discussions and submitting written reflections on the topic. The program’s ultimate goal is to give children the agency necessary to break the violent patterns in their families, schools, and communities. This is accomplished by encouraging students to make personal commitments to do something about the issue.

In addition to those roles, Woodruff is the Vice President of the NFL Alumni Players Association and serves as Chairman of the Board for the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh.
