David Sedaris Bio and Career:

David Raymond Sedaris, born on December 26, 1956, American comedian, novelist, radio contributor, and humorist. In 1992, when National Public Radio aired his article “Santaland Diaries,” he gained widespread recognition. In 1994, he released Barrel Fever, his debut book of essays and short stories. His subsequent book, Naked, went on to become the first of several New York Times bestsellers, and his 2000 collection Me Talk Pretty One Day was awarded the Thurber Prize for American Humor. Johnson City, New York is where Sedaris was born.  to Louis Harry “Lou” Sedaris, an IBM engineer, and Sharon Elizabeth. He had an Anglo-American mother.  His father was born in the United States to Greek immigrants from Apidae.

David was brought up in the Greek Orthodox faith, but his father was a Protestant. Sedaris was found in a Chicago club by radio personality Ira Glass while he was reading a diary he had kept since 1977. Sedaris had been doing odd jobs in Raleigh, Chicago, and New York City. He was invited by Glass to participate in his once-a-week local program The Wild Room. Sedaris said in: “Everything I am owes to Ira. It’s like someone waved a magic wand because my life has suddenly entirely transformed.”

Due to his popularity on The Wild Room, Sedaris made his debut on National Public Radio on December 23, 1992, when he read “Santaland Diaries,” a radio essay on his alleged adventures working as an elf at Macy’s department store during the Christmas season in New York. Sedaris published a book of short tales and essays titled Barrel Fever in 1994. When Ira Glass launched his once-weekly hour-long PRI/Chicago Public Radio program, This American Life, in 1995, he started to contribute frequently. Sedaris started penning articles for The New Yorker and Esquire. He released Naked, the second book of essays, in 1997. In 1998, Publishing Triangle gave it the Randy Shilts Award for Gay Non-Fiction.

He went on to become a New York Times Best Seller with Naked and his subsequent four essay collections, Holidays on Ice, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and When You Are Engulfed in Flames. I Talk Pretty One Day was written over the course of seven months, primarily in France, and it was released in 2000 to “practically unanimous glowing acclaim.”

A new Sedaris collection was previewed in September 2007 and was scheduled to be released the following year. All the Beauty You Will Ever Need was the collection’s working title, but Sedaris later changed it to Indefinite Leave to Remain before settling on When You Are Engulfed in Flames.  Sedaris hinted in October 2007 that the collection might contain a “surprisingly brief story about the decision to quit smoking” in addition to other tales about chimpanzees at a typing school and visitors to France, despite the assumption of at least one news source that the book would be fables.

Sedaris was awarded an honorary doctorate by Binghamton University in December 2008. Meet David Sedaris, a four-part series of articles that Sedaris read in front of a live audience, was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in April 2010. In June 2011, the second series of six shows debuted on BBC Radio 4 Extra. A third series debuted in September 2012.  The sixth season debuted on BBC Radio 4 Extra in July 2017. Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary, a collection of his short stories, was published by him in 2010.  Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, a book of articles by Sedaris was published in 2013; Theft By Finding, a collection of his diaries from 1977 to 2002, was published in 2017. C.O.G., a feature-length movie that was based on an article from Naked, was released in 2013.

The Guardian article “Chicken Toenails, Anyone” by David Sedaris from July 2011  drew some criticism for being insulting to China and Chinese culture. Sedaris, a frequent visitor to Craig Ferguson’s late-night US talk show, traveled to Scotland in April 2012 with the cast of CBS’s The Late, Late Show for a theme week that was taped in and around Cumbernauld and in Edinburgh. In May 2012, the five weeknight episodes were broadcast.

Listeners enjoyed “Santaland Diaries,” which turned Sedaris into what The New York Times called “a minor phenomenon.” He secured a two-book deal with Little, Brown, and Company and started recording a monthly program for NPR based on his journal entries, edited and produced by Glass.  In 1993, Sedaris told The New York Times that he was writing his second book, a novel “about a man who keeps a journal and whom Mr. Sedaris described as “not me, but a lot like me,” and that he was publishing his first book, a collection of stories and essays.

David Sedaris, the second oldest of six children, was raised in a suburban Raleigh neighborhood after the Sedaris family relocated when he was a youngster. From oldest to youngest, his siblings are Lisa, Gretchen, Amy, Tiffany, and Paul. Tiffany passed away in 2013, a topic David addresses in the article “Now We Are Five” that appeared in The New Yorker.

Sedaris briefly attended Western Carolina University after graduating from Jesse O. Sanderson High School in Raleigh before going to and leaving Kent State University in 1977. David experimented with performance and visual art when he was in his twenties. In several of his articles, he discusses his lack of achievement.

Sedaris frequently makes fun of his family, his middle-class upbringing in the suburbs of Raleigh, North Carolina, his Greek heritage, homosexuality, jobs, education, drug use, and obsessive behaviors, as well as his life in France, London, New York, and the South Downs in England. A large portion of Sedaris’ humor is purportedly autobiographical and self-deprecating. He is Amy Sedaris’s brother and a frequent writing partner. Sedaris was chosen to join the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2019.

Sedaris earned the 2001 Thurber Prize for American Humor for that book. Variety announced in April 2001 that David Sedaris had sold the film rights to the Me Talk Pretty One Day book to Wayne Wang, who was adapting four of the book’s stories for Columbia Pictures.

Sedaris and his sister expressed concern about how their family would be portrayed in the script after Wang had finished writing it and started casting when Sedaris begged to “get out of it.” He discussed the discussion and its effects in his article “Repeat After Me.” According to Sedaris, Wang was “a true prince I didn’t want him to be upset with me, but he handled it with such maturity. In any case, I never saw how it could be made into a movie.”

Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, written by Sedaris in 2004, debuted at number one on The New York Times Nonfiction Best Seller List in June of that year.

Sedaris narrated the audiobook version of Dress Your Family, which received a Grammy nomination for Best Spoken Word Album. Ira Glass predicted that David Sedaris would publish a book of animal tales in March 2006; throughout that year, Sedaris included a number of animal fables in his US book tour, and three of his fables were featured on This American Life.
