CBE, FRSL, Kenneth Martin Follett is a British author who has sold more than 160 million copies of his thrillers and historical novels. In Cardiff, Wales, on June 5, 1949, Follett was born. He was the first child born to tax inspector Martin Follett and his wife Lavinia, who also had two other children, Hannah and James.  His Plymouth Brethren parents forbade him from seeing movies or television, so he quickly became interested in reading but didn’t care much about school until he was in his teens.  When he was ten years old, his family moved to London, and he started working hard in school at Harrow Weald Grammar School and Poole Technical College.

Success came slowly at first, but after the 1978 release of Eye of the Needle, international success with over 10 million copies sold, he became both rich and well-known on a global scale. The Pillars of the Earth, a book about constructing a cathedral in a small English community during the Anarchy in the 12th century, shocked readers as Follett’s first non-spy thriller.

The book was a huge hit, garnered rave reviews, and spent eighteen weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list. It topped best-seller lists in Canada, Britain, and Italy and spent six years on the German list. So far, 26 million copies have been sold.  German creator and publisher Daedalic Entertainment released the computer game adaption on August 16, 2017.

Its far later sequel, World Without End, follows the offspring of the protagonists from Pillars and takes place in Kingsbridge 157 years later. It concentrates on the fates of a select group of individuals as the Black Death, a plague that ravaged Europe beginning in the middle of the 14th century, wreaks havoc on their lives. A Column of Fire, the series’ subsequent book, was released in September 2017.

The narrative spans a half-century, starting in 1558, as Ned Willard and Margery Fitzgerald’s relationship develops. It starts at a time when Elizabethan England is under attack from Europe, and the queen is faced with numerous schemes to have her removed from power.

The Pillars of the Earth’s prequel, The Evening and the Morning, is the fourth book in the series. The novel “concerns the gradual formation of the town of Kingsbridge and of the various people — priests, lords, peasants, and the enslaved — who played crucial roles,” and is set in the decade about 1000 AD, during the so-called Dark Ages. As a result, the book offers “a strong foundation for the succeeding books in the Kingsbridge series.” As thorough an account of the creation of society — with its laws, buildings, customs, and beliefs — as you are likely to encounter anywhere in popular fiction,” has been said about the series.

He was accepted in 1967 and began studying philosophy at University College London, where he also got interested in left-leaning politics. In 1968, he wed Mary, and the following year, Emanuele, their son, was born. Following graduation in the fall of 1970, Follett enrolled in a three-month post-graduate journalism school before beginning work as a trainee reporter for the South Wales Echo in Cardiff. Marie-Claire, a daughter, was born in 1973.
