Zakk Wylde Bio and Career:
Guitarist, songwriter, and producer Zakk Wylde is known all over the world for his work in the hard rock and heavy metal genres. Between 1988 and 1995, he worked with Ozzy Osbourne, where he gained his professional reputation. Since then, he has fronted the heavy metal band Black Label Society and recorded with them. He has also released two largely acoustic solo albums that have received high criticism.
One generation of guitarists has been influenced by his original pentatonic, pinched blues shredding technique, deeply rooted in vintage Southern rock, the influence of Peter Green, 1970s hard rock, and classic metal. Wylde’s signature guitar is a bullseye-decorated Les Paul Custom and bears his name. He refers to it as “The Grail. ” New Jersey is the state in which Wylde spent his childhood. At the age of eight, he began taking guitar lessons, but he soon stopped them and instead focused his attention on practicing the instrument on his own.
It wasn’t until he was in his mid-teens that he decided to start taking lessons formally again. In 1984, he formed his first band, Stone Henge, and played with several other bands along the Jersey Shore. In 1987, Wylde provided Osbourne with a demo tape of their work. After just one audition, we decided to hire him. A year later, the guitarist made his debut in the recording studio on No Rest for the Wicked album. The album was certified platinum twice over. He continued to work with Ozzy through the release of Ozzmosis in 1995. (that also featured Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler). In the previous year, Wylde had established the heavy metal band Pride & Glory.
After releasing an album under their name in 1995, the band disbanded. Wylde began a solo career by releasing the now-classic, acoustically-based Book of Shadows in 1996. Before this, Wylde had entertained the idea of joining Guns N’ Roses. In 1998, he and drummer Phil Ondich recorded Sonic Brew for the Japanese Spitfire label Black Label Society. The album was released in 1998. In the spring of 1999, it was made available everywhere else in the world. They were able to put together a full band by recruiting Nick Catanese on bass and John DeServio as a second guitarist, but the band’s lineup was unstable.

Before his departure to join Metallica, Robert Trujillo was the band’s bassist for some time before making a move (DeServio returned). After the release of the band’s second album in 2000, titled Stronger Than Death, Ondich left the group and was succeeded by Craig Nunenmacher. Wylde rejoined Ozzy Osbourne’s band in 2001 while simultaneously maintaining his involvement with the Black Label Society. This year, the guitarist contributed to Osbourne’s album Down to Earth, and the following year, they went on tour together to support the album Live at Budokan. In addition, Wylde went on tour with BLS in 2001, which resulted in the recording of the live album Alcohol Fueled Brewtality + 5. The following year, in 2002, the band released the studio album1919 Eternal.
It was evident that Wylde’s job with Black Label Society was his first concern. Based on the band’s studio work and their live performances during that period, the readers of Guitar World voted him the Most Valuable Guitarist on many occasions between 2003 and 2006. Between 2003 and 2006, BLS issued four more albums: The Blessed Hellride and Hangover Music Vol. VI, Mafia, and Shot to Hell (the latter being the final to contain Catanese and Nunenmacher). In 2006, the guitarist returned to working in the studio with Osbourne.
He performed on Black Rain, released in 2007, and toured with him until 2009. In addition to it, the BLS collection titled Skullage was made available. In 2010, Wylde was admitted to the hospital and had treatment for blood clots. After that, he gave off drinking completely. He came back into the recording studio with BLS. 2011 saw the release of Order of the Black through E1, which included Will Hunt in his new role as drummer. In the same season of American Idol, Wylde appeared on the show and played guitar during James Durbin’s performance of Sammy Hagar’s “Heavy Metal.”
While on tour with Guns N’ Roses and Bullet for My Valentine, he frequently joined GNR onstage to perform a cover of “Whole Lotta Rosie” by AC/DC. In addition to his primary occupation, he also runs a side business producing “Berserker” Hot Sauce in collaboration with Blair’s Sauces and Snacks. Stone Henge was the name of Wylde’s first band, which he formed while he was still a teenager and played in New Jersey. The following local band for which Wylde was a member was Zyris, with whom he played for a short while.
In 1987, Ozzy Osbourne gave him a major break by choosing him to be his band’s lead guitarist and co-writer. This was the beginning of his career. He was the lead guitarist for Ozzy’s band and the lead guitarist and vocalist for another band known as “Pride & Glory,” which broke up at a later time. In 1995, he parted ways with Ozzy to concentrate on forming his new band, Black Label Society, which would become one of the most successful and well-known bands of its era. The year after that, he came out with his debut solo album, “Book of Shadows.”
In 2001, he was welcomed back into Ozzy Osbourne’s band. After another five years, in 2000, his band “Black Label Society” released their album “Shot to Hell” through the record label Roadrunner. During the 2006 edition of “Ozzfest,” Wylde appeared on stage both with Ozzy and the “Black Label Society” on separate occasions. The following year, Ozzy released their album “Black Rain,” which featured Wylde as the lead guitarist on all the tracks. In the film “Bones,” released in 2010, he played the role of “Jed,” one of the main characters.
The song “The Song Remains Not the Same” was initially released as a single by the “Black Label Society” in May of 2011. In addition, he contributed a solo to “Black Veil Brides'” rendition of “Unholy,” which was initially performed by Kiss. Zakk is well-known for playing Gibson Les Paul Custom model guitars with a “bullseye” graphic on the instrument’s body. At the 2015 NAMM show, he announced his new company, which will be called Wylde Audio, and he showed off some of his new custom guitars and amplifiers.
In 1988, he released “No rest for the Wicked,” the first album they had worked on. It was his first big break, and the RIAA awarded the album both gold and double platinum certifications for its success. When the album was first made available to the public, it debuted on the Billboard 200 chart at position 13. In 1996, he released his debut album under his name, titled “Book of Shadows.” Listeners reacted favorably to the singles “Between Heaven and Hell” and “Way Beyond Empty,” both of which were released.
