Max Martin Bio and Career:

Max Martin, the millennial successor to Sweden’s bubbly and relentlessly catchy pop history, was not a global superstar like ABBA, Roxette, or Ace of Base, but he was the heir apparent. However, as a composer and producer, he was a driving force behind the teen pop renaissance of the late 1990s. He was responsible for writing and producing a run of global blockbusters for artists such as Britney Spears, *NSYNC, and the Backstreet Boys, amongst many others.

Then, throughout the 2000s, he altered his musical style by including slick guitars and pop/rock melodies in his music. During this time, he wrote chart-topping hits such as “It’s My Life” by Bon Jovi and “Since You’ve Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson. Throughout the decade of the 2010s, artists such as Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and the Weeknd had a string of number-one singles.

Martin Sandberg was born on February 26, 1971, and grew up on Stockholm’s outskirts. As a teenager, he sang in many ensembles before joining a glam metal band with his friends named It’s Alive. After that, he started using the stage name Martin White and dropped out of high school to pursue a career in music. This was a smart move, as it led to It’s Alive being signed to a record contract with the Cheiron label, which producer Denniz Pop runs.

In the early 1990s, they released an album and went on tour around Europe. During this time, Martin started working on songs with Pop, who eventually became his advisor, to fulfill his hidden passion for pop music. Martin was employed as a house writer and producer at Cheiron in 1992 and spent many years learning the ropes; at the same time, Denniz Pop gained worldwide fame recording Ace of Base’s smash album The Sign. In 1992, Martin was hired as a house writer and producer at Cheiron. Pop also changed his protege’s name from Martin White to Max Martin because he believed the new name sounded “poppier.”

Their first production collaboration was the song “Wish You Were Here” by Rednex, which was released in 1995. Shortly after, both collaborated on Ace of Base’s second album, The Bridge. The duo’s influence was also felt by musicians such as 3T, Army of Lovers, and Leila K, amongst others. Their big break came when Jive Records approached the Cheiron team about collaborating with a new act known as the Backstreet Boys, a group of adolescent singers.

Martin and Pop were skeptical about the capacity of a boy band to achieve chart success, yet, they still planned and produced the group’s first album. The record was the first commercial failure in the United States, but it was successful in Europe. Martin was involved in writing and producing the American hits “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)” (his first big hit in the United States), “As Long as You Love Me,” and “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).” In 1997, the Backstreet Boys were relaunched in their home country, this time with considerable success.

In the same year, 1997, Martin collaborated with Robyn to write and produce the worldwide dance smash “Show Me, Love.” In 1998, Pop and Martin produced the first albums for the boy bands 5ive and *NSYNC, the latter of which had the smash song “I Want You Back.” Unfortunately, Pop lost his battle with illness later that summer, temporarily leaving the Cheiron studio in chaos. Martin soon took over the creative leadership and found a new key collaborator in writer/producer Rami. Rami joined Martin for the recording of Britney Spears’ first album,…Baby One More Time was released in 1999.

Martin’s first number-one success in the United States was the album’s title track, and he was also involved in the production of one of the album’s subsequent singles, “(You Drive Me) Crazy.” 1999 was a banner year for Martin: he worked with Celine Dion (“That’s the Way It Is”) and Bryan Adams while helming the Backstreet Boys’ follow-up album, Millennium. Millennium became the year’s best-selling album worldwide on the strength of several Martin tunes, including “I Want It That Way” and “Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely.” Martin also worked with the Backstreet Boys in 1998, when he produced their self-titled album.

ASCAP awarded Martin the title of Songwriter of the Year in 1999, a feat he accomplished again in 2000 thanks to his contributions to Britney Spears’ Oops!… I Did It Again, the Backstreet Boys’ Black & Blue album, and his co-writing of Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life.” Martin’s songs were playing nonstop on radio stations around the world. At the end of 2000, Martin shut down the Cheiron studio and its supplementary songwriting teams. In conjunction with Rami, he opened up a new facility in Stockholm, and their first major project together was Britney, which was Britney Spears’ third studio album and was released in 2001.

After completing work with Celine Dion, Martin collaborated with Kelly Clarkson in 2004. Breakaway, the album that resulted from this collaboration, not only helped establish Clarkson as a Grammy-winning powerhouse but also contained “Since U Been Gone,” an international success that peaked at number one. Not only did Martin maintain his notoriety during the next decade, but he also went on to play the most crucial role of his whole career. Katy Perry (including “I Kissed a Girl,” “Teenage Dream,” and “Roar”), P! nk (“So What”), Kelly Clarkson (“My Life Would Suck Without You”), Britney Spears (“Hold It Against Me”), Maroon 5 (“One More Night”), and Taylor Swift were some of the other artists whose songs topped the charts thanks to his production (“Style,” “Wildest Dreams,” and “Blank Space”).

Martin moved past Mariah Carey to take the third place spot as the songwriter with the most number one Hot 100 hits when Swift’s “Shake It Off” reached the top in 2014. With a total of 18, this put Martin in third place, trailing only John Lennon and Paul McCartney, who hold the record for the most number-one hits on the Hot 100. The following February, he was awarded the Grammy for Producer of the Year in the Non-Classical category. Later that same year, he returned to the top of the Hot 100 with the slick, booming pop of Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” and the retro disco-funk of the Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face.” Recognizing his significant impact on contemporary music, the Polar Music Prize was bestowed on him in February of 2016.
