Tom Cleverley Bio and Career:

English football player Thomas William Cleverley, who was born on August 12, 1989, competes for EFL Championship team Watford as a midfielder. Cleverley was raised in Bradford, West Yorkshire, despite being born in Basingstoke, Hampshire. He attended Hanson School. He was a member of Bradford City’s youth programme before joining Manchester United as a trainee in July 2000 at the age of 11. Cleverley received the number 7 jersey and joined Leicester City on loan on January 16, 2009, for the balance of the 2008–09 campaign. Alex Ferguson informed Cleverley that he will be loaned out to obtain more first-team experience after Cleverley played and scored in the preseason friendly against Valencia.  Cleverley joined Watford on loan on August 18, 2009, and was able to participate in that evening’s game against Nottingham Forest.  He started the game, had a booking just four minutes into the second half, and then scored in the second minute of stoppage time to secure a 4-2 victory.

Four days later, on his home debut, he added another goal for Watford in a 2-2 draw with Blackpool, becoming Watford’s joint-top scorer in November after scoring the second goal in a 2-0 victory over Preston North End. Soon after, he decided to extend his loan at Watford till the end of the 2009–10 campaign. Before having his season prematurely interrupted in April 2010 by a knee ligament injury, Cleverley added five more goals in 20 appearances for Watford. Later, he was named the team’s Player of the Season.

He made his debut on January 19, 2009, in a 2-0 away victory over Yeovil Town, replacing Matty Fryatt in the 85th minute. On February 3, 2009, in a 4-1 victory over Walsall, Cleverley netted his first Leicester City goal. Later, on March 7, 2009, during a 4-0 victory over Cheltenham Town, Cleverley netted his second goal for the team. Cleverley’s loan stint ended early because he sustained a season-ending shoulder injury against Colchester United after scoring twice in 15 games for Leicester. On April 2, 2009, he returned to Manchester United for more medical attention and underwent shoulder surgery.  Cleverley received a medal on April 24 after Leicester won promotion as League One champions, despite the fact that his loan had finished.

Cleverley was one of three players James Chester, Corry Evans, and Manchester United’s reserve team manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer nominated for the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year award toward the end of the season. He made nine appearances for the under-18 team in the 2005–06 season. On the bench for the squad’s 4-1 victory over Everton on the road in February 2006, he also got a taste of reserve team football. On February 15, 2007, over a year after his debut for the under-18 squad, he made his debut for the reserves in a 0-0 away draw against Bolton Wanderers. But less than a month later, he sustained a long-term injury and had to miss seven months of action. In a 1-1 home tie with Liverpool for the reserves in October 2007, he made his comeback.

Cleverley’s rise as a fixture with the Manchester United reserve squad during the 2007–08 campaign was marked by his 21 appearances as the team won the Manchester Senior Cup and the Lancashire Senior Cup, the latter of which he scored in the championship game against Liverpool. On January 23, 2008, when Manchester United defeated Bolton Wanderers 2-0 on the road in the Premier Reserve League, he also scored his first goals while wearing a Manchester United jersey. In the absence of the squad’s usual captain, Sam Hewson, his steady play for the reserves earned him the team captaincy. He also earned a nomination for the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year award, which Richard Eckersley won.
