Stanley Roger Smith was born on the 14th of December, 1946, in New York City. He is a former tennis player from the United States who is best known to non-tennis players as the creator of the name of a popular brand of tennis shoes. The former world number one tennis player and two-time Grand Slam singles champion also forged with his partner Bob Lutz one of the most successful doubles combinations in history, which became known as the Smith-Lutz doubles partnership.

Smith grew up in Pasadena, California, and was mostly taught by Pancho Segura during his formative years. In undergraduate tennis, he competed for the University of Southern California (USC) under the tutelage of Coach George Toley, where he was a three-time All-American and won the NCAA Singles Championship in 1968, as well as the NCAA Doubles Championships in 1967 and 1968. Smith was a member of the Gamma Tau chapter of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity while at the University of Southern California.
According to Jack Kramer, a long-time tennis promoter and former great player himself, Smith was one of the top twenty-one players of all time in his 1979 book, Testing Myself.
