He is a former tennis player from the United States who is best known to non-tennis players as the creator of the name of a popular brand of tennis shoes. About (Stan Smith– Biography)
Smith grew up in Pasadena, California, and was mostly taught by Pancho Segura during his formative years. In undergraduate tennis, he competed for the University of Southern California (USC) under the tutelage of Coach George Toley, where he was a three-time All-American and won the NCAA Singles Championship in 1968, as well as the NCAA Doubles Championships in 1967 and 1968. Smith was a member of the Gamma Tau chapter of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity while at the University of Southern California.
According to Jack Kramer, a long-time tennis promoter and former great player himself, Smith was one of the top twenty-one players of all time in his 1979 book, Testing Myself. Smith was placed 35th in the “40 Greatest Players of the TENNIS Era” list published by TENNIS magazine in 2005. Smith was one of the first players to be elected into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987. Following his playing career, Smith went on to become a volunteer coach for the United States Tennis Association (USTA).
