Roger Waters Bio and Career:
On September 6, 1943, George Roger Waters was brought into the world. Great Bookham, which is located in Surrey and is close to Dorking, is where he was born. Great Bookham is around twenty miles south of London. Many of his songs are about the Second World War, which was when his father, Eric Fletcher Waters, died away during the British assault of Anzio, Italy (to whom The Final Cut was dedicated). In an issue of Musician Magazine from 1992, Waters discusses his upbringing.
Roger Waters began to play when they played “The Abdabs” (1965). The Abdabs performed predominantly rhythm and blues music throughout their sets. After some time had passed, Juliette tied the knot with Wright, after which she, Noble, and Metcalf left the band. After that, Waters recruited Syd Barrett and Bob Close to play the guitar for Pink Floyd. Close would subsequently leave the band, but Barrett and Barrett alone would become the band’s signature sound. In the latter half of 1965, they began to be known as “The Pink Floyd Sound,” and then simply as “The Pink Floyd.” The recordings of two blues musicians named Pink Anderson and Floyd Council were owned by Syd Barrett at the time, and the latter was the source of the name Pink Floyd. It was a common belief that Syd received the name in a dream when she first started using it.
Midway through 1966, The Floyd started drawing notice to themselves by routinely performing at underground hangouts such as The UFO Club and The Marquee Club’s Spontaneous Underground. During this time period, they made the shift from playing cover versions of psychedelic R&B songs to performing their own music, the majority of which were compositions by Syd Barrett. According to what Floyd historian Miles had to say about this time period, “At the moment, The Floyd were the band with the loudest sound anybody had ever experienced. They were the most peculiar as well. They were the band that played in the basement.”
In March of 1967, a record titled “Arnold Layne” was issued as a direct result of the burgeoning underground fame of The Floyd. It achieved a position of #20 in the British charts, which brought the band recognition in national media outlets. Their subsequent song, “See Emily Play,” spent seven weeks on the charts and peaked at position number six.
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the first long-playing album released by Pink Floyd, spent a total of seven weeks on the charts and peaked at position no. 6. The popularity that followed their first two singles and Piper proved to be too much for Syd, as the huge amounts of drugs he was taking in, the blind adulation of his followers, and other things all combined to make him unpredictable on stage and in the studio. Ultimately, this led to the band’s breakup.
After the other members of the band came to the conclusion that they needed an extra guitarist to fill in for Syd, they approached David Gilmour about becoming a member of the band. It was soon determined that the band could go on without him, and so one night, on the way to a gig, they simply did not pick him up on the way there. This was shortly after the arrival of Gilmour, which contributed to Syd’s deteriorating health.

Following the release of A Saucerful of Secrets, Ummagumma, and Atom Heart Mother, Pink Floyd continued their recording career and worked on a few soundtracks. It was at this period that they first showed signs of the skill that would eventually result in the formation of DSOTM. Echo was a whole side-long tune that was featured on the album Meddle, which served as a kind of forerunner to DSOTM.
In late 1972 and early 1973, before the album’s official release, Pink Floyd performed many tracks from the Dark Side of the Moon live. Of course, Dark Side of the Moon went on to become an incredible hit, and it is still considered to be one of the band’s more popular albums (it would still be on the Billboard top 200 if the rules allowed it). As a result of the overwhelming acclaim that “Dark Side of the Moon” received, Pink Floyd found themselves in a precarious situation.
They had accomplished what every rock band strives for, but now they were at a loss for what to do next. Around this time, they started experimenting with music made out of commonplace things. That is, all of the music was supposed to be performed using commonplace things like bottles and washing boards and the like… After playing around with this concept for a while, the band decided to abandon it in favour of working on what would eventually become Wish You Were Here.
Throughout this period, Roger made the observation that it seemed as if the band wasn’t truly present during the sessions. That is, to some extent, what the song “Wish You Were Here” is alluding to. In addition to that, there are a few rather clear digs directed at the music business. Even though Wish You Was Here was released on September 15, 1975, the band did not immediately begin touring in support of the album.
When the band went on tour at the beginning of 1977, their setlist included WYWH in addition to two songs from what was going to be Animals that were continuously developing. Animals were first made available to the public on January 23, 1977. Roger Waters found the inspiration he needed to write “The Wall” when he was on tour with Pink Floyd. The unadulterated avarice of performing at stadium performances made him ill. At the very final concert of this tour, Roger expressed his disgust by spitting on one of the audience members.
After the tour was over, Roger and the band took something like a break. Both “The Wall” and “The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking” were written by Roger during this time period. He presented them to the other members of the band and informed them that he wanted to work on one project with the band and work on the other project as a solo endeavour. The band decided against recording “Pros and Cons” because they felt it was too personal, and instead they started working on “The Wall.”
