Robert Peston Bio and Career:
Robert Peston is a well-known British journalist born on April 25th, 1960. He has held the position of Business Editor for BBC News ever since February 2006. His coverage of the financial crisis that occurred in the late 2000s brought him to the attention of a more general audience, particularly his breaking news of the catastrophe at Northern Rock. Maurice Peston, an economist who subsequently became a Labour peer, and his wife, who worked for the NHS, are Peston’s parents. Peston is their son.
Peston was enrolled in Highgate Wood Secondary School, the comprehensive neighborhood school in Crouch End, in North London. Both parents were ardent supporters of the public school system. After receiving his degree from Balliol College, Oxford, in 1982, Peston went on to complete his education at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), thanks to a scholarship he was awarded. Peston temporarily worked at stockbroker Williams de Broë until he became a writer in 1983 for the Investors Chronicle before joining The Independent newspaper for its inauguration in 1986.
In 1989 and 1990, Peston held the deputy city editor position for the Sunday Correspondent newspaper. In the year 1990, he was promoted to the position of City Editor for the Independent on Sunday. He was employed by the Financial Times from the years 1991 till 2000. While working at the Financial Times, he had several editorial positions there, including Political Editor, Banking Editor, and Head of an Investigations Unit (which he founded).
During his time as the Political Editor, he had a memorable falling out with Alastair Campbell, the Downing Street Press Secretary. Campbell frequently imitated Peston’s habit of flicking back his hair, and he once responded to a challenging question by saying, “Another question from the Peston school of smartarse journalism.” His last role at the Financial Times was that of Financial Editor (in charge of business and financial coverage).
In 2000, he was given the position of editorial director at Quest, an online financial research service owned by Collins Stewart, a financial corporation. While doing so, he also started writing a weekly column for the Daily Telegraph and was a contributing editor for The Spectator at the same time. In 2001, he moved his allegiance from the Telegraph to the Sunday Times, where he published a weekly business profile titled “Peston’s People.” At the same time, he left The Spectator for the New Statesman, where he wrote a weekly column. Both publications are still in existence.
It was in 2002 that he started working at The Sunday Telegraph, first as the City editor and then as the assistant editor. In 2005, he was promoted to the position of assistant editor. Peston was appointed to succeed Jeff Randall as the BBC Business Editor in late 2005. In this role, he is responsible for the coverage of business and the City on the BBC’s flagship television and radio news programs, the BBC News Channel and its website, and Radio 4’s Today program.
It was reported in The Observer on October 19, 2008, that the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) could investigate the source of one of Peston’s scoops. This scoop revealed, in September 2008, in the tense environment of the global financial crisis, that merger talks between HBOS and Lloyds TSB were at an advanced stage. While no improper behavior on the part of Peston was implied, it was claimed that the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) could inquire into the source of one of Peston
