Randall Wallace Bio and Career:
Randall Wallace always aspired to be a minister or a composer instead of a filmmaker. After dropping out of seminary to pursue a career in creating music, he worked as a writer and a television scribe before penning the Academy Award-winning script for Braveheart and moving on to a directing career. Wallace, a native Tennessean, began penning stories at the tender age of seven. After graduating from Duke University with a degree in religion, he enrolled in a seminary, however, he continued his reading and research into a wide range of literary works throughout his academic career.
He even started a record label to disseminate his original music, which was played on local radio stations in Virginia and the Carolinas. After finishing theological studies, Wallace moved to Nashville in search of a music career. He oversaw the Opryland animal shows while also pursuing his dream of being a famous musician. Unfortunately, his lack of economic success can be attributed to the fact that he did not write any country music, the most popular genre in this city. A number of Wallace’s novels, including “Blood of the Lamb” and “Where Angels Watch,” were written after he moved to Los Angeles in 1980.
His reviews were very positive, with many critics drawing parallels to the works of Robert Penn Warren and Charles Dickens; sadly, book sales were not equally as enthusiastic. With the help of producer Stephen J. Cannel, Wallace gave television writing a shot. Teleplays for Hunter, J.J. Starbuck, Sonny Spoon, and Broken Badges were written by him. Braveheart, Mel Gibson’s film about the life of Scottish patriot William Wallace in the Middle Ages, was inspired by a visit to Edinburgh Castle in Scotland. He wrote the script, spent his own money on the production, and then teamed up with Mel Gibson, who would star in and direct the film.

Several Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, were given to the wildly successful film Braveheart. Wallace’s script earned him three nominations for major awards: a Writers Guild of America trophy, a Golden Globe, and an Academy Award. In 1998, Wallace made his directorial debut with the film An Officer and a Gentleman: The Man in the Iron Mask, an adaption of Alexandre Dumas’s novel The Three Musketeers and Their Attempt to Depose Louis XIV and Install a More Deserving King. Despite the film’s star-studded cast—which included Leonardo Di Caprio, Gabriel Byrne, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, and Gerard Depardieu—Wallace was let down when it failed to become the commercial success he had hoped it would.
The following year, Wallace met filmmaker Michael Bay, who asked him to write the script for Pearl Harbor (2001). Their collaboration was off to a promising start until Bay brought in a team of script doctors to pad the film with unnecessary action sequences. Even though he is still listed as Pearl Harbor’s sole credited screenwriter, Wallace mysteriously abandoned the production because he disagreed with Bay’s decision.
He didn’t tarry to start planning his second film, the Vietnam War epic We Were Soldiers (2002). He discovered the original work, a memoir by Lieutenant General Hal Moore and war writer Joseph Galloway, in a bookstore at the airport. He was able to buy the picture rights with the money he generated on Braveheart.
