Monica Seles (Tennis player)

Originally from Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, Monica Seles was born on December 2, 1973, the daughter of Karolj Seles, a comic book artist, and Ester Seles, a computer programmer. Her Hungarian parents had a son, Zoltan, who was older than her. As a five-year-old, Seles began playing tennis with the help of her father. Using both hands to hit her forehand and backhand shots, she was able to put more power into her game, making her a more formidable opponent. Throughout her childhood, Seles was renowned as an exceptional tennis player and won multiple tournaments, including the European 12-and-under title at the age of 10.

During a junior event in America, she was approached by Nick Bollettieri, a tennis coach, who volunteered to work with her. After moving to the United States for Seles’ career, the family spent the following two years at Nick’s tennis academy, where she worked tirelessly to improve her game. By the time he was 13, Seles had become the world’s best junior tennis player. After dating Tom Golisano, a 32-year-old wealthy American businessman, Monica Seles has been in a relationship ever since 2009.

The couple got engaged in June of this year. After starting tennis at the age of five in Yugoslavia, Seles quickly became the country’s greatest junior player. The tennis coach Nick Bollettieri discovered Seles after she won a junior event in Florida and asked her to join his academy, where she blossomed. When she won the youngest-ever French Open champion at the age of 16, beating Steffi Graf, Seles became a tennis sensation. When she was at her peak from 1991 to 1993, she won a total of nine Grand Slam titles, including the Australian Open four times, the French Open three times, and the United States Open two times.

When she became the youngest ever in world number one in singles, she was known for her aggressive playing style and the unusual grunts she made with almost every hit. Steffi Graf’s crazy fan stabbed Seles in the back in 1993, bringing an abrupt halt to her extraordinary success. Two years after the fatal accident, Seles took a break from tennis. Although she returned to the sport in the late 1990s and early 2000s, she was unable to recapture her previous dominance and retired in 2008. Seles has been hailed as one of the greatest female players of all time, and many believe her to be the first.

About (Monica Seles– Biography)

Having gone professional at the age of 15, Monica Seles beat Chris Evert to claim her first career title in May 1989. Despite reaching the French Open quarterfinals, she was defeated by the then-world number one Steffi Graf and dropped to the sixth spot by the end of her debut season. With six straight victories in the next season, Seles claimed the Lipton Player’s Championship, U.S. Hard Court Championship, and Eckerd Open titles, as well as a final defeat of Graf in a Lufthansa Cup final.

Later, Seles won the 1990 French Open, defeating Graf in the finals, to earn her maiden Grand Slam triumph. Seles also became the youngest player ever to win the Roland Garros tournament at the age of 16 and finished the year ranked world No. 2 on the tennis tour. After winning the Australian Open at the age of 17, Monica Seles became the youngest player in tennis history to hold the world’s number one position. After winning the French Open, she went on to win more tournaments, including the U.S. Open, her third Grand Slam victory of the year. She successfully defended her Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open, the French Open, and the US Open in 1992, establishing her dominance in the women’s game.

Seles won 33 of the 34 tournaments in which she competed between January 1991 and February 1993. In the spring of 1993, during a competition in Hamburg, Germany, a fan of Steffi Graf stabbed Seles in the back, causing her career to come to a halt. Graf devotee Gunter Parche stabbed Seles in the shoulder with a boning knife on April 30, 1993, during a break in a match. Parche’s motive for stabbing Seles was revealed to be to help Graf reclaim her World No. 1 status.

She received prompt medical attention for her physical injury but also sought treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and decided to take a two-year break from tennis after the tragedy. The Australian Open champion returned to the court for the first time in July 1995 and won her fourth title in 1996, although she struggled to recapture her former competitive edge. Seles, a citizen of the United States since 1994, had a key role in three of the United States’ victories in the Fed Cup. She played her final tour match at the 2003 French Open after injuring her foot. Seles retired from professional tennis in 2008 with a career singles record of 53 victories, including nine Grand Slam titles.
