Michael Chang(Tennis player)

Michael Chang’s parents, Joe Chang and Betty Chang welcomed him into the world in 1972 in Hoboken, New Jersey. Betty and Joe met after being introduced by a mutual acquaintance when they both relocated from Taiwan to the United States in 1959 and 1966, respectively. When Betty was a child, she lived in Delhi, India, the daughter of a Chinese ambassador to the Republic of India at the time, and a subsequent Legislative Yuan member and ambassador to Cambodia, the Dominican Republic, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Michael Tung was her father. Joe was born in the Chinese city of Chaozhou and relocated to Taiwan when he was seven years old. Joe chose Michael’s given name, while Betty chose his English given name (who named him after her father). After relocating from Hoboken, New Jersey, to St. Paul, Minnesota, where Michael began to learn the sport, the Changs moved to Placentia, California, and then Encinitas, California, in order to provide more tennis opportunities for Michael and his older brother, Carl, and to improve their overall quality of life.

During the trip, Betty decided to leave her profession as a scientist in order to accompany Chang.  Chang dropped out of their tenth year at San Dieguito High School in Encinitas after getting his GED in February 1988 in order to pursue a professional tennis career. Chang had risen to #163 in the world as a 15-year-old amateur.

About (Michael Chang– Biography)

Chang also spent a year and a half in the master of ministry programme at Biola University in La Mirada, California, where he received his bachelor’s degree. He is a member of the Biola University Board of Trustees. At the time of his victory, American Michael Chang was the youngest male tennis player to ever win a Grand Slam singles competition. He won the French Open in 1989 at the age of 17 years, 3 1/2 months. After winning the French Open in 2011, he became the first American male to do it since Tony Trabert did so in 1955. Chang was born on February 22, 1972, in the New Jersey city of Hoboken. His parents were born in Taiwan and had immigrated to the United States.

He initially picked up a tennis racquet when he was six years old, inspired by his father’s participation in local competitions. In the end, the family decided to relocate to San Diego, California, since Chang’s obvious competitiveness and talent led them to believe that the weather would be more conducive to year-round outdoor play. Chang won the junior championship of the United States Tennis Association in 1987, which was one of the numerous amateur trophies he amassed. As a little, undersized fighter who stood only 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 metres) tall and weighed only 160 pounds (72.6 kilogrammes), Chang relied on his speed, quick reactions, and training to enable him to defeat larger and more powerful opponents.

When he first turned professional in 1988, he moved fast through the world rankings. During that season, he won his first professional singles title and was voted Newcomer of the Year by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Even though Chang had risen to the 19th position in the world rankings by the time of the 1989 French Open, few would have guessed that the teenager would go on to win the title. When he reached the semifinals, he would meet Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, who at the time was the world’s top-ranked player. Chang, despite being hampered by severe leg cramps, rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat Llendl 4–6, 4–6, 6–3, 6–3, 6–3 and advance to the finals, where he will face Stefan Edberg of Sweden.

Chang’s comeback was one of the greatest in the history of the French Open, and he was hampered by severe leg cramps. A come-from-behind victory over Edberg in the French Open final, 6–1, 3–6, 4–6, 6–4, 6–2 in another dramatic match, gave Chang his second French Open trophy in three years. Chang continued to compete in major tennis tournaments throughout the 1990s and into the twenty-first century, winning three titles. A few of his career highlights include reaching the finals of the 1995 French Open, the 1996 United States Open, and the 1996 Australian Open, among other events.

On September 9, 1996, Chang achieved a career-high singles ranking of second in the world, which was a personal best. As of 2003, Chang had 662 career victories and had earned more than $19 million in prize money during his stint on the professional tour. He announced his retirement from the tour that year. Away from the court, he was involved with the Chang Family Foundation, which his family founded in 1999 to promote Christianity among youngsters through youth activities.
