Originally from Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, Monica Seles was born on December 2, 1973, the daughter of Karolj Seles, a comic book artist, and Ester Seles, a computer programmer. Having gone professional at the age of 15, Monica Seles beat Chris Evert to claim her first career title in May 1989. Despite reaching the French Open quarterfinals, she was defeated by the then-world number one Steffi Graf and dropped to the sixth spot by the end of her debut season. With six straight victories in the next season, Seles claimed the Lipton Player’s Championship, U.S. Hard Court Championship, and Eckerd Open titles, as well as a final defeat of Graf in a Lufthansa Cup final.
