Michael Connelly Bio and Career:

Author of detective novels and other crime fiction, Michael Joseph Connelly, is best known for his works with LAPD Detective Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch and criminal defense lawyer Mickey Haller. Connelly is the best-selling author of 31 novels and one nonfiction book. His books have been published in 40 different languages and have sold over 74 million copies worldwide. The Black Echo, his debut book, took home the 1992 Edgar Award for Best First Novel from the Mystery Writers of America. Blood Work, based on Connelly’s 1997 novel, was adapted into a movie in 2002, both of which Clint Eastwood was a part. The Lincoln Lawyer, a film adaptation of Connelly’s book, stars Matthew McConaughey as Mickey Haller and was released in March 2011.

From 2003 to 2004, Connelly served as the Mystery Writers of America’s president. The second child of property developer W. Michael Connelly and homemaker Mary Connelly, Connelly was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has Irish ancestry.  Connelly claims that his father was a dissatisfied artist who encouraged his kids to strive for success in life and who took chances and cycled between career success and failure. Connelly’s mother exposed her son to the realm of mystery novels because she loved crime fiction. Connelly began his career as a criminal-beat journalist at the Daytona Beach News-Journal in 1980 after earning his degree from the University of Florida. He remained there for nearly two years before moving on to the Fort Lauderdale News and Sun-Sentinel in 1981.

He covered the criminal beat there during the drug battles in South Florida. He remained with the newspaper for a while, and in 1986, he and two other reporters interviewed survivors of the 1985 Delta Flight 191 plane tragedy for several months. For this work, Connelly was nominated as a Pulitzer Prize nominee.  Connelly received a position as a crime writer at the Los Angeles Times as a result of the accolade. He and his wife Linda McCaleb, whom he met in college and wed in April 1984, relocated to California in 1987. When President Bill Clinton emerged from a bookstore holding a copy of The Concrete Blonde in front of the waiting cameras in 1994, Michael Connelly earned a lot of media attention. The two agreed to meet at the Los Angeles International Airport.

In 1996, Connelly published The Poet, his first novel in which the protagonist was a reporter rather than Bosch. The book was well-received. Connelly wrote another book, Blood Work, about a new character, FBI agent Terry McCaleb, before turning back to Bosch with Trunk Music in 1997. Clint Eastwood, who also starred as McCaleb, a heart transplant agent on the hunt for his donor’s killer, directed the 2002 movie Blood Work. One of Connelly’s friends received a heart transplant, and Connelly witnessed his friend’s struggle with survivor’s guilt after the operation. This is when the novel came to be.  Connelly’s straightforward response, when asked if he had anything against the adaptations created for the big screen, was, “If you take their money, it’s their turn to tell the narrative.”

Before penning Void Moon, a stand-alone book about Las Vegas criminal Cassie Black, Connelly authored Angels Flight, another book with Bosch. Connelly used Bosch and McCaleb to investigate a crime in A Darkness More Than Night, which was published in 2001, before publishing two volumes in 2002. First up was City of Bones, the seventh Bosch book, and second was Chasing the Dime, a standalone book. Connelly relocated to Tampa Bay, Florida in 2001 with his wife and kid in order to be nearer to their respective families. His books continued to be set in Los Angeles.

Lost Light, another book by Bosch, was released in 2003. A CD called Dark Sacred Night, the Music of Harry Bosch was released alongside this book and includes some of the jazz music that both Connelly and the fictitious character Bosch enjoy.  Despite this, Connelly only listens to instrumental jazz while he writes since it lacks obtrusive vocals and because improvisational playing stimulates his creativity.  The Narrows, a 2004 book that followed The Poet, starred Bosch rather than McEvoy. In addition to this book, a DVD titled Blue Neon Night: Michael Connelly’s Los Angeles was also published. In this film, Connelly showcases some of the Los Angeles locations that are frequently mentioned in his works.

Connelly visited High Tower Court after relocating to Los Angeles, the same residence used by Robert Altman in The Long Goodbye and Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe in his 1942 novel The High Window. Connelly persuaded the building management to pledge to call him as soon as the flat became available. When the management found Connelly ten years later, Connelly made the decision to rent the property. Several years were spent writing at this apartment.

Connelly authored his first published book, The Black Echo, after spending three years at the Los Angeles Times. He had previously started two unfinished books but decided not to try to publish them.  He sold Little, Brown The Black Echo, which was released in 1992 and received the Edgar Award for an outstanding first novel from the Mystery Writers of America. This is the first book to include Connelly’s main recurrent character, Los Angeles Police Department Detective Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch, who, in Connelly’s opinion, has little in common with the author himself.

Connelly chose the name Bosch in honor of Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch, who is well-known for his works that depict sin and atonement, including the picture Hell, a replica of which can be seen on the office wall behind Connelly’s computer. Connelly compares his own creations to a large canvas on which all the people from his stories are depicted as moving currents. Cross currents are inevitable when they intersect at some point.

Connelly achieves this by reintroducing characters from earlier books and having them participate in books that are written five or six years after they were first introduced. Before giving up his work as a reporter to pursue writing full-time, Connelly wrote three additional books featuring Detective Bosch: The Black Ice, The Concrete Blonde, and The Last Coyote.

Michael Connelly Phone Number, Email, Contact Information, House Address, and Social Profiles:

Connelly’s family relocated from Philadelphia to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, when he was 12 years old, where he attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Connelly began to become more interested in crime and mysteries when he was 16 years old. On his way home from his job as a hotel dishwasher, he saw a man throw something into a hedge. Connelly made the decision to look into the thing and discovered that it was a gun covered in a lumberjack shirt.

He returned the gun, followed the man into a pub, and then departed to go home and inform his father. Connelly summoned the police to the tavern later that evening, but the man had already left. Connelly was introduced to the world of police officers through this incident, and he was impressed by how they operated.

Connelly began his studies in construction management at the University of Florida in Gainesville’s Rinker School of Building Construction with the intention of following his father’s early career choice of building construction. Connelly attended the screening of Robert Altman’s movie The Long Goodbye after receiving grades that weren’t as high as anticipated.

The movie, which was adapted from Raymond Chandler’s self-titled 1953 novel, gave Connelly the desire to write mysteries. After reading every Philip Marlowe-related work by Chandler at home, Connelly chose to move to the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, majoring in journalism and minoring in creative writing.
