About (Mammootty – Biography)

In the 1980s, Mammootty appeared in films such as Sphodanam (directed by P. G. Viswambharan), in which his name appeared in the credits as “Sajin,” and in some subsequent films; Munnettam (directed by Sreekumaran Thampi); and Thrishna (directed by I.V. Sasi). For his performance in Ahimsa, he received his first state award in the category of Best Supporting Actor in 1981. Aalkkoottathil Thaniye and Adiyozhukkukal were two of his performances.

He played a police officer in K. G. George’s 1982 investigative thriller Yavanika, which was a commercial and critical success.Padayottam was the first Indian film to be completely processed in India on 70 mm film. It was also the first Malayalam film to have a budget of more than one crore (US$130,000)1984–1993 Mammootty played the lead in over 150 films over a five-year period, from 1982 to 1987. He appeared in approximately 35 films in 1986 alone, including a brief appearance in Mazha Peyyunnu Maddalam Kottunnu.


He worked on what became known as the Mammootty-Kutty-Petty films in the mid-1980s. Mammootty played the protagonist in these films, a husband and father with a 3- or 4-year-old daughter who works in a high-ranking position in a company. Mammootty made a comeback in 1987 with the films New Delhi and Thaniyavarthanam. In New Delhi, he portrayed a victimised journalist who exacted vengeance on politicians who flatter him.

Mammootty played a CBI officer in the 1988 film Oru CBI Diary Kurippu. Following Oru CBI Diary Kurippu, three more murder mystery sequels with the same cast of characters were produced: Jagratha (1989), Sethurama Iyer CBI (2004), and Nerariyan CBI (2005), all directed by K. Madhu and penned by S. N.  Mammootty appeared in two films with autobiographical elements directed by M. T. Vasudevan Nair: Aksharangal, directed by I. V. Sasi, and Sukrutham, directed by Harikumar. T. Hariharan directed Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, which was written by M.T. Vasudevan Nair. Varunni’s role as a hunter in I.V. Sasi’s Mrigaya and another film, Mahayanam, were also considered for the State Award
