Lauren Oliver Bio and Career:
Lisa Oliver American novelist has written a number of young adult books, including Panic, the Delirium trilogy, and Before I Fall, which was adapted into a big-budget movie in 2017. Oliver is the author of the middle-grade fantasy book The Spindlers and a 2012 E.B. White Read-Aloud Award nominee for her middle-grade book Liesl & Po. Oliver was a Queens native. She loved to read and write, too: “I have always thought that spending hours in front of the computer each day debating the distinction between “chortling” and “chuckling” is natural because I come from a family of authors.
I used to write a sequel for a book’s characters after I finished it as a child because I did not want to have to let them go.” Before I Fall, Oliver’s debut book was released on March 2, 2010, by Hodder & Stoughton in the UK and HarperCollins in the US. The story follows Sam, a teenage girl who must relive her death seven times while learning new lessons and unraveling the mysteries surrounding her demise.
According to Oliver, while riding the subway to meetings, she wrote the entire book on her BlackBerry. She would email herself the chapters so that she could continue working on them later. Oliver was reared in Westchester, New York, a little town that is quite reminiscent of the one described in Before I Fall. Oliver was born in Queens. She is the daughter of Harold Schechter, a true crime author. She was encouraged to make up stories, draw, paint, dance around in costumes, and spend a lot of her time essentially living imaginatively because her parents are both professors of literature.
Before eventually penning her own works, she began by creating inventive sequels to her favorite novels. She studied literature and philosophy at the University of Chicago before returning to New York to enroll in the creative writing MFA program at NYU.In addition, she started working at Penguin Books’ Razorbill young adult division, where she began writing Before I Fall. She left in 2009 to devote herself to writing full-time and is now content working from home.
On March 3, 2017, Open Road Films released the movie adaptation, which starred Zoey Deutch as Samantha Kingston, the primary character. Replica, Oliver’s next young adult novel, allows the reader to read the same story from two separate perspectives as it chronicles the stories of two girls, Gemma and Lyra.
Oliver’s second and third books in the Curiosity House series, titled The Screaming Statue and The Fearsome Firebird, respectively, were his fourth and fifth books for younger readers. She started working on Hookline, an aggregator platform of social AR iconography, at the same time as she was appointed president of Glasstown West, the company’s film and TV branch, in 2019.
She has written and developed more than a hundred original novels, TV shows, and movie scripts with Lexa Hillyer. Delirium is Oliver’s second book and the first of a trilogy about a dystopian future. Hana, Oliver’s debut novella, which was published following Delirium, presents Hana’s viewpoint on the events of Delirium. Pandemonium, the second book in the trilogy, was published on February 28, 2012. On December 26, 2012, a different novella called Annabel was made available as an e-book. It contains scenes that occur before those in Delirium, such as information about Lena’s mother before the events.
Requiem, the trilogy’s third and last novel, was released on March 5, 2013. The third novella, Raven, which takes place between the events of Pandemonium and Requiem, was released as an e-book on March 5, 2013, along with the third book, Requiem. On March 5, 2013, a softcover book containing all three of the novellas—Hana, Annabel, and Raven—was made available.
On September 1, 2011, Oliver’s debut middle-grade book, about a girl who receives a visit from a ghost who claims her deceased father is trapped in Limbo and that only she can get him through, was released. In The Spindlers, her second middle-grade book, a little girl named Liza ventures into a mythical underworld in order to save her younger brother from the evil creatures. On August 2, 2012, the book was published.
Panic, a young adult contemporary novel, was published by Oliver on March 4. It recounts the lives of Heather and Dodge, two recent high school graduates from the struggling tiny town of Carp. The enigmatic and perilous “Panic” game, which is played every summer following graduation and involves a series of heart-pounding tasks that get increasingly deadly in order to cull out the weak and determine who is the most fearless of all, serves as the center of the action. The winner earns a significant quantity of money, giving them an opportunity to break free from their shared poverty. Oliver was the showrunner for the television adaptation of Panic, which Amazon Prime Video distributed.
