His mother, Ardis, is a nurse, and his father, Lynn Sorbo, taught mathematics and biology to students in junior high school. He is their son. He is of Norwegian origin. He came from a Lutheran household and was reared in that faith. Sorbo received a bachelor’s degree in marketing and an advertising degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead, where he also double majored. In order to contribute financially to his education, he started working as a model for advertisements both in print and on television.

Sorbo began her career in television advertisements in the middle of the 1980s, and by the time she retired in 1993, she had been in more than 150 of them. During this time, he also started making guest appearances on a number of television shows, including 1st & Ten, Murder She Wrote, and The Commish, which marked the beginning of his acting career. He was a prospective candidate for the character of Agent Mulder in The X-Files, which ultimately went to David Duchovny, and he was considered for the role of Superman in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, but he was passed over for the job in favor of Dean Cain.

He was featured in a well-known series of worldwide television commercials for Jim Beam bourbon whiskey, which became famous for the tagline “It ain’t Jim Beam” which Sorbet used repeatedly in the advertising. His breakthrough role as the Ancient Greek cultural figure Hercules came to him in 1994 via the television picture Hercules and the Amazon Women, which was a part of Universal Television’s Action Pack and first broadcast in April of that year. He played the character. This was the first in a series of television films that were shown throughout the year; the fifth and last film, Hercules in the Maze of the Minotaur, was broadcast in November 1994. The series began with this particular film.

The popularity of these films led to the commissioning of the television series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, which aired for a total of 111 episodes over the course of six seasons, beginning in January 1995 and ending in November 1999. The series ran for a total of six seasons. The series established Sorbo as a prominent figure on a worldwide scale and was among the most popular syndicated television programs of its day. During the course of the series’ run, Sorbo also directed two episodes of the show and co-wrote one additional episode.

Sorbo also appeared as a guest star in two episodes of the successful spin-off series Xena: Warrior Princess, which was created as a result of the popularity of the original program. The series was canceled in the middle of shooting the sixth season, of which only eight episodes were made when the show was canceled. Sorbo would go on to make his last appearance as Hercules in the episode “God Fearing Child” from the fifth season of Xena: Warrior Princess, which was broadcast in February of 2000. In the space of time that he spent portraying Hercules, he made his debut in a prominent role in the film Kull the Conqueror (1997). [9] After the conclusion of the television series Hercules, Sorbo went on to portray the lead character of Captain Dylan Hunt in the television series Andromeda, which ran from the years 2000 to 2005. In 2006, he appeared as a guest performer on the comedy Two and a Half Men and had a recurring part in the last season of The O.C.

He had a starring role in the sequel to the film Walking Tall that came out in 2004, titled Walking Tall: The Payback, which was released on home video in 2007. In the second sequel, Walking Tall: Lone Justice, which was published later that year, he played the character he had previously played. In addition, he had starring roles in the movies “Last Chance Café” on the Lifetime Channel and “Avenging Angel” on the Hallmark Channel, both of which also featured his real-life wife, Sam Jenkins. He also had a guest-starring role in the second season episode of the television series “Psych” titled “Bounty Hunters!”

He had a role in the parody movie “Meet the Spartans,” which was released in 2008 and was a commercial success despite receiving almost uniformly scathing reviews from critics. He had a starring role in the science fiction vampire film Tales of an Ancient Empire, which was directed by Albert Pyun. In 2012, he starred in the film Abel’s Field and also worked as an executive producer for the project. In an episode of the television show Celebrity Ghost Stories that aired in 2012, Sorbo shared a story about an encounter he had while living in Minnesota shortly after completing his studies at college. Both he and his girlfriend said that they had seen the apparition of the “Bride of White Rock Lake,” a lady who was said to have been slain on the day of her wedding and to have died on her wedding day.

In the video game The Conduit for the Wii, Sorbo provided his voice for one of the major heroes named Prometheus. In the video game God of War III, which was published for the PlayStation 3 in March of 2010, Sorbo reprised his role as Hercules, although this time he portrayed the character in a more villainous light. Alongside his wife Sam, Sorbo contributed voice acting for characters in the computer game Cloudberry Kingdom in July of 2013. In the 2014 film God’s Not Dead, in which Sorbo played the role of an atheist college professor, he also had a co-starring role. In this role, he demanded that his pupils renounce their respective beliefs on the first day of class.

In the Skylanders series, he also provided the voice for Crusher, and in Smite, he provided the voice for Retro Hercules. On the CW show Supergirl, which aired in 2017, Sorbo portrayed the role of the unfortunate King Lar Gand of Daxam. In the late fall of 1997, when Sorbo was on a press tour for Kull the Conqueror and between the fourth and fifth seasons of Hercules, he had an aneurysm in his shoulder, which resulted in four strokes. During this time, Sorbo was also newly engaged. As a direct consequence of this, he was rendered incapacitated for the subsequent number of years, and his condition was concealed from the general public while he recovered. During the fifth and sixth seasons of Hercules (which aired in 1998 and 1999), Sorbo had a reduced production schedule in order to accommodate his health. Additionally, the program included more guest actors in order to lessen the amount of work that was required of Sorbo.

Sorbo was left with a lifelong loss of 10 percent of his eyesight, as well as weakness, decreased balance, and headaches as a result of the strokes, which are suspected to have been caused when chiropractic manipulation of his shoulder expelled blood clots from the aneurysm. Sorbo disclosed the specifics of his injuries and how his wife Sam assisted in his recovery in his book titled True Strength, which was published in 2011. Sorbo wed actress Sam Jenkins on January 5, 1998. They had first met the previous year when she appeared on an episode of Hercules in which Sorbo was a guest star.
