Kevin Sinfield Bio and Career:
Kevin “Sir Kev” Sinfield, MBE (born 12 September 1980 in Oldham) is a former English professional rugby league footballer who captained the Leeds Rhinos in the Super League. He was awarded the MBE in 2011. As an England captain, his preferred position was loose forward, however, he was capable of covering both Stand-off and Hooker positions as well.
With the Leeds Rhinos, Kevin Sinfield has spent his entire professional career and is one of the most decorated players in Super League history, having captained the team to seven Super League titles and two Challenge Cup victories while also winning individual awards such as the Lance Todd Trophy (2005), the Harry Sunderland Trophy twice, and the Golden Boot (2012), one of only four British-based players to achieve the latter.
He holds the records for being the most prolific points-scorer in the history of the Leeds Rhinos, the most prolific points-scorer in the history of the Super League, and the third most prolific points-scorer in the history of British rugby league, after Jim Sullivan and Neil Fox. Sinfield is also the first captain in Super League history to have led a club to three consecutive Super League championships.
Sinfield made his first-team debut for Leeds against Sheffield Eagles when he was 16 years old. A further three appearances followed throughout the 1997 and 1998 seasons, with his first try coming in a match against Huddersfield in September 1998. Despite only making 21 appearances and scoring two tries, Sinfield had a breakthrough season in 1999. When he was not picked for the 1999 Challenge Cup Final, which took place at the old Wembley Stadium, he felt cheated. Leeds beat the then-London Broncos 52–16 in the Super League.
When the England rugby league team competed in the 2000 Rugby League World Cup, Sinfield stood out for his performance, scoring a hat-trick of tries in the team’s win against Russia, which was 76–4. His first international appearance came during the 2001 Kangaroo tour when he represented Great Britain in all three Ashes Tests against the Australians. Sinfield was a stand-off half for Leeds in the 2003 Challenge Cup Final against Bradford, when he scored four goals in his team’s loss.
The second and third Ashes Tests of the Kangaroo tour of Great Britain and France in 2003 were his first international appearances for the United Kingdom. When Sinfield played for Leeds, he was a stand-off halfback who scored four goals in the team’s Super League Grand Final triumph against Bradford in the same year. Leeds, winners of Super League IX, played the Bulldogs, premiers of the 2004 NRL season, in the 2005 World Club Challenge in Melbourne. The Leeds United captain led his team to a 39–32 win, scoring five goals and one drop goal while playing from a stand-off halfback.
Sinfield represented Leeds in the 2005 Challenge Cup Final, when he scored four goals in the team’s defeat against Hull F.C. Despite this, he was given the Lance Todd Trophy as a man of the match for his efforts. While playing for Leeds, he played as a loose forward, scoring a goal in the team’s Super League Grand Final defeat to Bradford in 2005. In addition, he was chosen to the Super League Dream Team in 2005.
