Julia Quinn Bio and Career:
Julie Pottinger, an American author of historical romance that has sold millions of copies, writes under the pen name Julia Quinn. Julie Pottinger was born Julie Cotler in 1970. Her books have been published in a total of 29 different countries, and the New York Times has included her on their list of best-selling authors on 19 separate occasions. In July of 2018, it was revealed that Shonda Rhimes will be adapting her book series about Bridgerton into a television show for Netflix.
Julie Pottinger spent most of her childhood in California after the divorce of her parents, despite having spent the majority of her formative years in New England. She was a voracious reader even when she was a little kid. Her father disapproved of her reading material, which included Sweet Dreams and the novels set in the Sweet Valley High universe.
He informed her that she may keep reading such things, but only if she could demonstrate that they were beneficial to her health. She didn’t waste any time in informing him that she was reading them in preparation for writing her own. In response to the challenge to demonstrate that she meant what she said, Pottinger sat down in front of one of their early computers and wrote the first two chapters of her book. Three years later, when she had finally finished her work, she attempted to submit it to Sweet Dreams, but it was turned down.
Pottinger received his degree in Art History from Harvard University, where he also received his diploma. She came to the conclusion that she did not know what she wanted to do with her degree during her final year of college and made the decision to enroll in medical school as a result. Because of this choice, she was compelled to continue her education for an extra two years in order to satisfy the scientific requirements that are needed in order to apply to medical school.
Pottinger started writing light-hearted Regency romance stories as a way to keep herself occupied during the long days that she spent studying physics. She found out that her first two books, Splendid and Dancing At Midnight, had been sold at auction a few weeks after she found out that she had been admitted to medical school. This was a rare event for a rookie romance novelist at the time. She decided to write two additional books during the two years that she postponed starting medical school.
Three of Pottinger’s works were already in print by the time she fulfilled her lifelong ambition and enrolled in the medical program at Yale University in order to become a physician. However, after just a few short months of studying medicine, Pottinger learned that she preferred writing to dissections. Dissections were a tedious part of the course. She dropped out of medical school in order to concentrate entirely on her literary career.
Pottinger identifies as a feminist and imbues her protagonists with feminist traits, even if these traits do not always align with the cultural norms that exist during the historical periods in which her books are set. Her writing is famous for being hilarious, and the language in her works is known for being snappy and smart.
The books focus almost entirely on the protagonists or protagonists’ relationships with other people rather than the grand external issues seen in many romance novels. When He was Wicked, one of her novels, was highly unusual for a romance novel in that the first four chapters actually describe the heroine in a happy marriage with someone who is not the hero, and then show the death of the original husband and deals with the grief of both the heroine and the hero before allowing the second love story to flourish. This was quite an unconventional approach to writing a romance novel.
The majority of her novels have dedications to her husband, Paul Pottinger, and these dedications sometimes include humorous suggestions for alternative names for the works in question. She was honored with the Romance Writers of America RITA Award in 2007 for her novel On the Way to the Wedding, and she received the award once again in 2008 for her novel The Secret Diaries of Miss Miranda Cheever. As a result of her victory in 2010 for her novel What Happens in London, she is now one of just 16 writers to be elected into the RWA Hall of Fame.
