Jonathan Kellerman Bio and Career:
Jonathan Seth Kellerman, a novelist, psychologist, and Edgar and Anthony Award-winning author from the United States was born on August 9, 1949. He is best known for his bestselling mystery series with the character Alex Delaware, a child psychologist who works as a consultant for the Los Angeles Police Department. Son of David, an aeronautical engineer and inventor, and Sylvia, a dancer and office manager, Kellerman was born in New York City. Before his family moved to California, he attended Yeshiva of Central Queens.
He was up in Los Angeles and graduated from UCLA with a bachelor of arts in psychology in 1971. In addition to teaching guitar, he supported himself through college by working as a cartoonist, artist, journalist, and editor. He co-wrote an unpublished book as a senior in college that won a Samuel Goldwyn literary prize. Other authors have used the award as a launching pad into the world of screenwriting, but Kellerman purposefully chose to stay away from it and enrolled in a PhD programme in clinical psychology at USC. In 1974, he graduated with a doctorate in psychology from USC. At the age of 22, he published his first scholarly publication on the issue of attribution of responsibility for childhood psychopathology, which was the focus of his PhD studies. He is now a paediatrics clinical professor at the Keck School of Medicine.
Helping the Fearful Child was a book for parents that Kellerman published in 1981 as a result of his considerable experience with anxiety disorders. When the Bough Breaks, his first book, was released four years later, went on to become a bestseller, and was made into a TV movie. Since then, he has released one or sometimes two bestselling thrillers each year. He worked with the court system as a consultant and expert witness while he was still a practising psychologist, and some of those experiences had an effect on his books.
Jonathan Kellerman and his wife Faye Kellerman, who is also a well-known best-selling crime author, reside in Los Angeles. They have four kids together. Their eldest child, Jesse Kellerman, is a bestselling author of plays and novels. Their youngest, Aliza Kellerman, collaborated with her mother to write the young adult book Prism, which was released in 2009.
Jonathan Kellerman has openly opposed the “misguided” practise of releasing seriously mentally ill individuals into the community, where they are left to fend for themselves rather than obtaining appropriate treatment. In contrast to the current approach, in which they only get medicine and no additional treatment at all, he has argued that such individuals should receive counselling and psychotherapy in addition to medication.
A monthly lecture at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles’ Division of Hematology-Oncology, as well as endowments at USC’s Psychology Department and Thornton School of Music, are just a few examples of Faye and Jonathan Kellerman’s decades of giving. Additionally, they have supported several educational organisations, the Georgia Okeeffe Museum, the Department of Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival.
When Jonathan was nine years old, his family moved from the Lower East Side of New York City to Los Angeles. In 1974, Kellerman received his doctorate of philosophy in psychology from the University of Southern California. He then started working as a staff psychologist at the USC School of Medicine, where he later rose to the position of full clinical professor of paediatrics. In the early 1980s, he established private practice and spent the evenings in his garage writing books. When the Bough Breaks, his first book to be published, was released in 1985 after years of writing and having manuscripts rejected. Then he wrote.

At the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles/USC School of Medicine, Kellerman completed his externship, internship, and postdoctoral fellowship. He then served as the founding head of the division’s psychosocial programme for haematology-oncology. In his first job at CHLA, Kellerman studied how psychological isolation in germ-free “plastic bubble” rooms affected the emotional and intellectual growth of young cancer patients.
He was tasked with minimising the negative effects of such extensive therapy at the same time by creating a multidisciplinary therapeutic strategy. The programme created by Kellerman and his team was the world’s first attempt to provide comprehensive, systematic, emotional support to paediatric cancer patients and their families, and it served as the blueprint for what is now considered appropriate care.
The success of that endeavour led to the expansion of psychosocial services to all oncology patients at CHLA. In 1980, Kellerman released his first book, a medical manual he edited titled Psychological Aspects of Childhood Cancer, as a result of his experiences at CHLA. He personally battled thyroid cancer and survived.
Additionally, Kellerman worked on research projects and published papers while at CHLA in the fields of disease impact and adolescence, disease-related communication and its impact on emotional adjustment, paediatric pain management, sleep disorders, and anxiety, as well as the treatment of childhood encopresis and the neuropsychological effects of chemotherapy and radiation on the central nervous system.
