Jonathan Demme Bio and Career:
Robert Jonathan Demme was an American director. Caged Heat, a 1974 movie about women in jail, marked Demme’s directorial debut under B-movie producer Roger Corman. Later, he became well-known for his nonchalantly humanist pictures, including Melvin and Howard, Swing Shift, Something Wild, and Married to the Mob. He won the Best Director Oscar in 1991 for his work on the psychological horror movie The Silence of the Lambs. Similar praise was given to his later movies, including Philadelphia and Rachel Getting Married. Early in his career, Demme co-wrote and produced The Hot Box and Angels Hard as They Come, two motorcycle movies that were largely based on Rashomon and helped launch the career of exploitation cinema producer Roger Corman.
After that, he directed three movies for Corman’s production company New World Pictures: Caged Heat, Crazy Mama, and Fighting Mad. After directing Fighting Mad, Demme went on to helm Handle with Care for Paramount Pictures, which was initially named Citizens Band in 1977. The movie garnered favorable reviews from critics, but it didn’t get much publicity, and it did poorly at the box office. A Columbo episode from 1978 was also directed by him. One of only three movies to win all the major awards in 1991, Demme received the Academy Award for The Silence of the Lambs. After being moved by the AIDS diagnosis of his friend Juan Suárez Botas and propelled by his own moral convictions, Demme used his position to help produce Philadelphia, which was one of the first significant motion pictures to address the AIDS crisis and won Tom Hanks his first Best Actor Oscar.
He also collaborated on the music video for “Streets of Philadelphia,” Bruce Springsteen’s Oscar-winning song for Best Song, alongside his nephew Ted. Many of the same actors appeared in both films thanks to Jonathan. The Manchurian Candidate, starring Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep, and The Truth About Charlie, based on Charade, had Mark Wahlberg in the Cary Grant role. Subsequently, his projects included an adaptation of Toni Morrison’s Beloved and remakes of two 1960s movies.
The world premieres of Man from Plains, a documentary by director Jonathan Demme, and Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, a book by former American president Jimmy Carter, took place at the Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival. Many critics linked his 2008 art-house smash Rachel Getting Married to Demme’s movies from the late 1970s and early 1980s.
It gained multiple accolades and nominations in 2008, including Anne Hathaway’s nomination for Best Actress in the Academy Awards. It was also listed among many “best of” lists. Demme directed the Beth Henley play Family Week in 2010, marking his first step into the theatre. Rosemarie DeWitt and Kathleen Chalfant both appeared in the play, which was presented by MCC Theater.
Demme had been contracted to direct, produce, and write an adaptation of Stephen King’s science fiction book on 11/22/63, but he later dropped out because they couldn’t agree on what should be in the script. With Justin Timberlake + the Tennessee Kids, which he described as a “performance film, but also a portrait of an artist at a certain moment in the arc of his career,” he returned to the concert documentary genre. His most recent endeavor was a history of rock & roll for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which will be released in the summer of 2017 and was assembled from footage of Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.
Bruce Springsteen, Suburban Lawns, New Order, and KRS-H.E.A.L. One’s project are just a few of the musicians whose music videos Demme has directed. Additionally, he created the 1989 album Konbit: Burning Rhythms of Haiti, a collection of Haitian music. Lou Reed included Konbit… on his list of “picks of 1989.” Together with producers Edward Saxon and Peter Saraf, Demme founded Clinica Estetico in 1987. They spent fifteen years operating out of New York City. Along with directing multiple concert movies like Stop Making Sense, Neil Young: Heart of Gold, and Justin Timberlake + The Tennessee Kids, Demme also served as a producer and director for a number of television shows.
Jonathan Demme Profile-
In Pleasantville, New York, the Jacob Burns Film Center had Demme on its board of directors. In addition to serving on the board, he was the curator and host of the monthly Rarely Seen Cinema series. Melvin and Howard, directed by Demme in 1980, was not widely distributed but got a flurry of positive reviews and accolades, as well as three Academy Award nominations, winning two of them. This success led to the hiring of Demme to helm the Swing Shift movie, starring Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Due to the divergent ideas of director Demme and star Hawn, what was supposed to be a prestige film for Warner Bros. and a significant commercial vehicle for Demme instead turned into a problematic production.
Demme ultimately rejected the finished picture, and when it was released in May 1984, audiences and critics alike largely shunned it. Following Swing Shift, Demme took a break from Hollywood to direct the Talking Heads concert movie Stop Making Sense, which received the National Society of Film Critics Award for best documentary; the eccentric screwball action-romantic comedy Something Wild; a film adaptation of the stage play Swimming to Cambodia, by monologist Spalding Gray; and the Married to the Mob comedy, which is set in the New York Mafia via Downtown.
