John Quiñones Bio and Career:

On May 23, 1952, Quiones was born in San Antonio, Texas. He is both a fifth-generation San Antonian and Mexican-American. Quiones was raised in a Spanish-speaking home and did not begin learning English until he was six years old, when he began attending school. When he was 13 years old, his father lost his job as a janitor, and the family then migrated to Traverse City, Michigan, to work as migrant farmworkers picking cherries. Later on in the summer, the Quiones family went tomato picking along the migrant route near Toledo, Ohio. From 1975 to 1978, Quiones worked as a radio news editor at KTRH in Houston, Texas, and also for KPRC-TV as an anchor and reporter.

He subsequently provided reporting for Chicago’s WBBM-TV.  Quinones began working for ABC News in 1982 as a general assignment journalist located in Miami. He co-anchored Primetime on ABC News and presented the segment What Would You Do? Additionally, he contributes to all ABC News programmes, including Nightline, Good Morning America, ABC World News Tonight, and 20/20. IDEA associate vice president Teresa McKinney approached the stage to launch the speaker series as students and staff filled the Lyceum.

In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, IDEA selected Quiones since he is a Mexican American from San Antonio, Texas. Because of the Upward Bound programme, which aids low-income kids in obtaining an education, he was able to afford attending university. He had three occupations, one of which was as a drugstore delivery person. Until an older employee found him and connected him with a nearby radio station, he would practise reporting by recording himself in the drugstore toilet.

Get an internship there, no matter what you want to do, said Quiones. “So you may have a taste of it.”Quiones was accepted to Columbia University and battled to remain there by submitting loan and scholarship applications until he ultimately was accepted into a fellowship. His master’s degree enabled him to get his first television position in Chicago. He described to the pupils how he went undercover to expose illegal immigration and assisted seven employees in obtaining temporary visas.

In order to shed light on injustice, corruption, and human rights breaches, he stated, “the journalist, he or she, is the one with a small candle or a little flashlight and they may shine it on the darkest parts of the room.”His first Emmy win, which he referred to as the most meaningful one, came from the narrative.

He travelled around Latin America for ABC to cover stories before he wrote “What Would You Do?” He started by sharing tales from the backstage after the audience saw a sequence from the musical that included bigotry. He learned that people were eager to assist one another without expecting monetary compensation from one of the show’s stories about a homeless lady who went viral. According to Quiones, “She did it because her corazon, or heart, told her it was the proper thing to do. As my wonderful mother Maria would say.”

Quiones collaborated in the creation of “What Would You Do?” because he wanted to shine a light on the darker aspects of American culture. He said that the epidemic appeared to have everyone at their wit’s end. Despite growing up during the Civil Rights Movement, he added, “I’ve never seen this nation as divided as it is now.” “I assume all you have to do is surf the web? Or you can watch those horrible viral videos on TV when people argue over things like Confederate flags or whether Black or Blue Lives Matter.

Quiones said that he knew his family was impoverished and that he spoke Spanish as a child. He and his two sisters were supported by the low-paying occupations that both of his parents had. Despite his family having lived in Texas for seven generations, it was considered that his parents had crossed the border.

Quiones told the League of United Latin American Citizens audience that he got his start because a San Antonio community organisation threatened to challenge the stations’ licences at the FCC  if they didn’t hire more Latinos. This is according to communications attorney Mark Lloyd.

Quiones was chosen to participate in the government anti-poverty programme Upward Bound, which helped inner-city high school students get ready for college, while attending Brackenridge High School in San Antonio.

Quinones participated in Lambda Chi Alpha’s Sigma Beta-Zeta fraternity as an undergraduate. Quiones obtained a Master of Arts degree in journalism from Columbia University after graduating from St. Mary’s with a Bachelor of Arts in speech communication.

Before commencing to grill Quiones, the crowd applauded. Marissa Zorola, a professor of marketing, was unable to attend the event in person, but her son, a student in criminal justice, Gabriel Sanchez, placed her on the podium using his phone. Zorola said that she and Quiones came from similar backgrounds and that she went to the same high school in San Antonio and that none of her parents had a formal education.

“Last spring, we came up with this brilliant concept to create a speaker series that would honour the different communities of teachers, staff, students, alumni, and community people,” McKinney said. She said that finding the ideal speaker to launch the series took a long time. IDEA sought a person to stand for human kindness.

For millions of his supporters, Quiones “has practically become the face of doing the right thing,” McKinney said. There was a quick sneak peek of “What Would You Do?” before Quiones hit the stage. The crowd applauded him standing up as he approached the stage. He expressed his happiness upon returning to Texas, his place of origin.

In his remarks, Quiones said, “I’m particularly pleased with UNT’s dedication to discovering ways that we can all contribute to social justice, diversity, equality, and inclusion for all. Because I wouldn’t be here if it were those who pushed for the representation of Latino reporters on television, I can understand it and relate to that better than anybody.
