John Deacon Bio and Career:
The bassist and composer from England known as John Deacon are well known for his songs “You’re My Best Friend,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Back Chat,” and “I Want to Break Free.” He became interested in music at a young age and at the age of fourteen, he formed his first band, “The Opposition.” He relocated to London at age 18 to pursue his second interest of studying electronics, and at age 20 received a first-class degree. He made his writing debut at the age of 23 the same year he joined the newly established band “Queen” as a bassist.
Soon after, he was recognized for his song “You’re My Best Friend.” After that, he kept writing songs, playing bass, and sometimes the guitar. He also assumed responsibility for the band’s financial management and utilized his expertise in electronics to maintain the band’s equipment. At the age of 46, he left the public eye and has since lived a peaceful suburban existence.
In Leicester, England, on August 19, 1951, John Richard Deacon was born. The Norwich Union insurance firm hired his father, Arthur Henry Deacon. Lilian Molly Deacon, née Perkins, was his mother. Julie Deacon is his younger sister. John Deacon performed with Queen for the first time at the College of Estate Management in Kensington in June 1971. They started recording their first album, Queen, in December. Queen was finally released on July 13, 1973. He was listed as Deacon John on this record.
The 1980 breakthrough song “Another One Bites the Dust,” written by John Deacon for Queen’s eighth studio album “The Game,” made him a household name around the globe. The song spent three weeks at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 list. Additionally, it received a Grammy nomination and lasted fifteen weeks on the Billboard Top Ten list. John Deacon abandoned The Opposition and his instruments in Oadby in August 1969 so he could focus on his coursework at Chelsea College. Nevertheless, he started his own band in late 1970 called “Deacon,” which played only one live show on campus.
At a disco at the beginning of 1971, he met Roger Taylor and Brian May, two founding members of the band Queen. He showed up for an audition since the band was without a bassist and was ultimately chosen for the role. The band’s first studio album, “Queen,” which was released on March 8, 1974, reached its top positions at #83 on the US Billboard 200 list and #47 on the UK Official Albums Chart. He started getting credit as John Deacon after that.
He became interested in electronics while attending Gartree, spending a lot of time developing and tinkering with tape recorders and radios. He took up playing the guitar in the early 1960s and is just as enthusiastic about music.
In 1965, John Deacon started his musical career by playing rhythm guitar with The Opposition and performing chart-topping songs. However, once the bassist for the band was sacked in 1966, he shifted to bass and began performing in numerous gigs throughout the years. In early 1969, he recorded three songs for an acetate CD.
He did not put his academics on the back burner despite his extracurricular pursuits. After gaining his O-level diploma, he enrolled at Beauchamp Grammar School and graduated in 1969 with his GCE A-level diploma. He then enrolled at Chelsea College in London to study electronics, graduating with first-class honors in 1971.

Deacon made his writing debut with “Misfire” and “Stone Cold Crazy” on the band’s third studio album, “Sheer Heart Attack,” which was released on November 8 of that year. May, their guitarist, also performed some guitar parts since he wasn’t feeling well when they were recording. The fourth album by Queen, “A Night at the Opera,” including songs by Deacon, including “You Are My Best Friend,” was released on November 21, 1975.
The song was later made available as a single and peaked at number seven in the UK and number sixteen in the US on the Billboard Hot 100. Deacon started composing songs frequently in 1975 and gained notoriety for penning “Spread Your Wings” for their 1977 album, “News of the World.” But in 1980, while working on Queen’s ninth album, “The Game,” he composed the songs “Another One Bites the Dust” and “Need Your Loving Tonight,” which became his first international singles. In 1984, he wrote the song “I Want to Break Free” for Queen’s eleventh studio album, “The Works,” and it became his next big success. Even though the song only peaked at #45 on the US Billboard Hot 100, it was certified silver and has sold over 200,000 copies worldwide.
Along with performing for Queens, he began playing for other bands starting in the middle of the 1980s, including SAS (Spike Edney’s All Stars). After Freddie Mercury passed away in 1991, he formally retired from public life, although he continued to play sometimes until 1997. He played at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert on April 20, 1992, with Queen’s remaining members.
Additionally, he performed bass to finish Mercury’s unfinished record, “Made in Heaven.” At the Théâtre National De Chaillot in Paris on January 17, 1997, he made his last performance on stage. John started his schooling at Leicester’s Linden Junior School, where he attended classes up until 1960. After that, he and his family relocated to Oadby, where he enrolled at Gartree High School.
