John Michael Montgomery Bio and Career:

John Michael Montgomery is an American country music performer who was born on January 20, 1965. Before starting his major-label solo career in 1992, Montgomery started performing alongside his brother Eddie, who would eventually become famous as one-half of the duet Montgomery Gentry. Seven of his singles on the Billboard country charts—”I Love the Way You Love Me,” “I Swear,” “Be My Baby Tonight,” “If You’ve Got Love,” “I Can Love You Like That,” “Sold,” and “The Little Girl”—has peaked at number one. He has more than 30 singles overall on the country charts. Another 13 have made it to the top 10. Billboard listed the top country songs of 1994 and 1995 as “I Swear” and “Sold,” respectively.

Both of Montgomery’s recordings of “I Swear” and “I Can Love You Like That” were made available at the same time as All-4-One’s cover versions. Montgomery has a number of hits that made it to the Billboard Hot 100; “Letters from Home” in 2004 saw him reach his best peak there. On January 20, 1965, John Michael Montgomery was born in Danville, Kentucky, to Carol Dean and Harold Edward Montgomery.

He was reared in Kentucky’s Nicholasville. His father, who performed in a local country band and Montgomery his first chords, encouraged him to pursue music. After his parents’ divorce, John Michael took up the guitar in the family band, which also featured his elder brother Eddie Montgomery, who would later create the duet, Montgomery Gentry, with Troy Gentry. Later, he played “working man’s country” live as a solo performer.

He was discovered and signed by Atlantic Records. His chart breakthrough was made in 1992 through the title single of Montgomery’s first album, Life’s a Dance, which reached number 4 on the Hot Country Songs charts. It was followed by his first number one, “I Love the Way You Love Me,” which peaked at number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100.  “Beer and Bones,” the album’s last song, peaked at number 21 on the country charts.

The Academy of Country Music selected “I Love the Way You Love Me” Single of the Year, and Life’s a Dance was certified triple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of three million units. During Season 19 of Austin City Limits on PBS, he made an appearance in 1994. Kickin’ It Up, Montgomery’s second album was released in 1994. I Swear, which peaked at No. 1 in both the country and pop charts and No. 1 in the country, according to Billboard Year-End, opened this album. Following this song, “Rope the Moon” peaked at No. 4 and was followed by “Be My Baby Tonight” and “If You’ve Got Love,” both of which peaked at No. 1.

After being recorded by the pop group All-4-One a year later, “I Swear” had even more popularity. Additionally, Kickin’ It Up sold even more copies than his debut, receiving quadruple platinum certification. His third studio album, with the same title, was released in 1995. I Can Love You Like That and Sold, which both reached Number One, were among the album’s five hit singles. It was also a quadruple-platinum seller. Both songs were covered by All-4-One, much like “I Swear” before it, and both were ranked as the top country hits of 1995 on the Billboard Year-End lists.

Following these two No. 1 singles, “No Man’s Land” peaked at No. 3, followed by “Cowboy Love” and “Long as I Live,” which both peaked at No. 4 in quick succession. The song “Holdin’ Onto Somethin’,” a number 10 country smash for Jeff Carson in early 1996, is also included on the CD. Due to a vocal cord injury, Montgomery put his career on hold at the end of 1995. His fourth studio album, What I Do the Best, was released by Atlantic in 1996.

His career’s first album without a No. 1 country hit was this one. Additionally, it didn’t sell as much as its predecessors did, although still received platinum certification. The No. 15 single “Ain’t Got Nothin’ On Us,” which debuted in the Top 40 its first week on the charts, served as the album’s first single and became his first song to fall outside the Top Ten since “Beer and Bones” in 1993.

Three additional Top Ten singles from the same album, “Friends” at No. 2, “I Miss You a Little” at No. 6, and “How Was I to Know” again at No. 2, helped him restore his chart momentum.  His 1997 Biggest Singles CD, which had a repeat of his greatest hits up to that time and went platinum in the US, came out after this one. It also had his brand-new song “Angel in My Eyes,” which peaked at No. 4 that year. Also in 1997, Montgomery contributed vocals as a guest on the song “Warning Signs,” which peaked at No. 56 and included bits from a Bill Engvall comedy routine.

With “The Little Girl,” Montgomery reached the top of the country music charts for the first time since 1995. This song, which was the first single from his 2000 album Brand New Me and included Alison Krauss’ backing vocals and was based on an urban legend, spent three weeks at the top of the charts and peaked at No. 35 on the Hot 100.

Despite the popularity of this song, Montgomery’s chart success continued to decline following “The Little Girl,” as the other two singles from the album, “That’s What I Like About You” and “Even Then,” both missed the Top 40 while Brand New Me received a gold certification. After Atlantic dissolved its Nashville office, Montgomery was also transferred from the parent company to Warner Bros. Records at the end of the year.

Montgomery has ten studio albums under his belt. After Atlantic Records Nashville disbanded its country section in 2001, his following two albums were issued by Warner Bros. Records Nashville, the parent company of the label that had previously distributed his first seven albums.
