The son of Columbia Records executive Michael Mauldin and Tina Mauldin, Jermaine Dupri Mauldin was born on September 23, 1972. Before he turned 10, Dupri’s bright musical career had started. In 1982, Dupri’s father, an Atlanta talent manager, organized a Diana Ross concert; to the pleasure of the audience, Dupri was able to enter the stage and dance with Ross.  When he was twelve years old, Dupri began dancing for the hip hop group Whodini.  In their music video for the song “Freaks Come Out at Night,” he made a cameo.  Before opening the New York Fresh Festival alongside Run-D.M.C., Whodini, and Grandmaster Flash, he started touring the nation. He performed with Herbie Hancock and Cameo during those shows. He developed the female hip hop group Silk Tymes Leather as his first act in 1990.

After meeting the lads in 1990 at a nearby mall, he went on to create the teen band Kris Kross with Chris Kelly and Chris Smith. Due to the popularity of their singles “Jump” and “Warm It Up,” both written and produced by Dupri, the group’s debut album, Totally Krossed Out, which was released in 1992, became multi-platinum. In 1993, he founded his own record company, So So Def. He quickly signed Atlanta-based female R&B group Xscape to the label after finding them at a festival there. The singles “Understanding,” “Love on My Mind,” “Tonight,” and “Just Kickin’ It,” the latter of which peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, helped their debut album, Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha, go platinum. On Yo! MTV Raps that same year, he met Da Brat through Kris Kross, signed her to his record company So So Def Recordings, and put out her platinum-selling debut Funkdafied . In 1993, So So Def Recordings and Columbia Records formed a distribution alliance. He first worked with Mariah Carey on the top-charting single “Always Be My Baby” in 1995. On the song “Not Tonight,” from Lil’ Kim’s 1996 album Hard Core, he made a contribution.

Additionally, he produced and co-wrote the singles “Keep On, Keepin’ On” by MC Lyte, “So Many Ways” by The Braxtons, and “Whodini” by Whodini. Dupri and Kris Kross collaborated once more for their third and last studio album that year. producing both of the album’s mediocre singles as well as the whole album. Dupri co-wrote and produced a number of songs for Usher’s second album, My Way, released in 1997. “You Make Me Wanna” was the main song, peaking at number one on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop and Rhythmic Top 40 charts. The second single, “Nice & Slow,” reached the top spot on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts, while the third single, “My Way,” peaked at number two. By the Recording Industry Association of America, all three singles have been given the Platinum certification.

When Monica, a featured performer on the record, released her second album, The Boy Is Mine, in July of the same year, she also went on to become a protégé of Dupri. “The First Night,” the album’s lead single, was produced by Dupri, and it reached the top of the U.S. Billboard charts. The album was certified triple platinum and received overwhelmingly positive reviews from reviewers. Dupri and Usher reconnected in 2004 and worked together on Confessions, contributing to the tracks “Burn,” “Confessions Part II,” and “My Boo,” three consecutive Billboard Hot 100 number one singles. Both Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best Contemporary R&B Album awards went to Confessions. The Recording Industry Association of America  awarded Confessions a diamond certification, and as of 2012, it had sold over 20 million copies globally and over 10 million copies domestically.

On Mariah Carey’s ninth studio album, The Emancipation Of Mimi, which included the huge blockbuster hit “We Belong Together,” Dupri and Mariah Carey collaborated once more in early 2005. The smash singles “It’s Like That,” “Shake It Off,” and “Don’t Forget About Us” were also included on the album. The song “We Belong Together” became the second-longest-running number one in US chart history after Carey’s 1996 collaboration with Boyz II Men on “One Sweet Day” after spending fourteen non-consecutive weeks at the top. The Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song went to “We Belong Together.” He co-produced and co-wrote the Hot 100 top 5 songs “Let Me Hold You” and “Like You” in the same year that he collaborated with Bow Wow on the Wanted album. In contrast, the former made their label debut the following year with the album On Top of Our Game, which peaked at the top of the US Top Rap Albums with the hit songs “I Think They Like Me” and “Lean wit It, Rock wit It.” The latter’s album, So So Gangsta, was released in September of that same year. On Monica’s recent hit, “Every time the Beat Drop” off her fifth album, The Makings of Me, the trio was also joined by Dupri. He also served as executive producer of the album. In 2008, he made another appearance and contributed the song “Rock With U” to her ninth album, Discipline.

In addition to numerous tracks for Jagged Edge’s labelmate Paul Wall, Donell Jones, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, and I’m Throwed, Dupri also produced singles for these artists in 2007. His autobiography, “Young, Rich and Dangerous: The Making of a Music Mogul,” was released in October 2007. (via Atria Books).
