Edwin Poots Bio and Career:
Edwin Poots, whose given name in Irish is Éadaoin Mac Pit and who was born on April 27, 1965, is a politician in Northern Ireland. In addition to being a member of the Legislative Assembly for the Lagan Valley constituency, he is also a member of the Democratic Unionist Party. Poots received his secondary education at Greenmount Agricultural College after completing his high schooling at Wallace High School in Lisburn. He is a family man and is now married with four kids. He was a member of the Lisburn City Council in the past and now works as a farmer. His grandfather, Charles Poots, was also a member of the DUP and ran for election to the Northern Ireland General Assembly for the Protestant Unionist Party in 1969. His father is also named Charles Poots.
During the years 1998-2003, Poots served in the Assembly as a member of the Environment Committee and as the head of the Committee of the Centre (also known as the Committee for the Office of the First and Deputy First Minister). On the 8th of May 2007, he was given the position of Minister of Culture, Arts, and Leisure in the Northern Ireland Executive. He served in this capacity until the 9th of June 2008, when Gregory Campbell was appointed to take over for him as a result of a cabinet reshuffle. It was thought that he was ousted from his position as Minister of Culture owing to the fact that he supported the designs for the Maze stadium. After that, on June 23, 2008, he was promoted to the position of Deputy Mayor of Lisburn.
Poots was reinstated to his position as Minister of the Environment and Head of the Department of the Environment on July 1, 2009, marking his return to the Executive. His appointment to the position of Minister of Health, Social Services, and Public Safety took place in May of 2011. Jim Wells succeeded Poots in the role of Minister of Health, Social Services, and Public Safety on September 23, 2014, when Poots resigned from the position.

Poots provided further evidence of his hostility toward the LGBT community in September 2013, when, in his capacity as Health Minister for Northern Ireland, he fought against a ruling that would have brought the laws governing LGBT adoption in Northern Ireland in line with those on the mainland of the United Kingdom. In January of 2016, Poots was criticised by some for saying that the most important jobs that Arlene Foster had were those of “wife, mother, and daughter.” This statement was made in reference to the newly elected First Minister. Poots justified his actions by claiming that what he had said was not sexist and that he regarded his most essential roles to be those of a “spouse, father, and son.” Others thought that he was being thoughtful and courteous with his words.
