Douglas Preston Bio and Career:

Douglas Jerome Preston is an American journalist and novelist who was born on May 31, 1956. Despite the fact that he is most known for his thrillers written in partnership with Lincoln Child, he has also authored six books on his own, including the Wyman Ford series and a book called Jennie that was turned into a Disney film. He is the author of six nonfiction books about science and adventure, and he also contributes on occasion to Smithsonian, The New Yorker, and other periodicals. Preston was raised in Wellesley, Massachusetts, after being born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Preston started his writing career at the American Museum of Natural History in New York after graduating from Pomona College in Claremont, California, and the Cambridge School of Weston in Weston, Massachusetts.

Preston made his literary debut for his solo career with Jennie, a book about a chimpanzee who is adopted by an American family. His subsequent book, The Codex, was a treasure hunt story with a tone that was much more reminiscent of his work with Child on thrillers. Tom Broadbent and Sally Colorado were first seen in The Codex. Tyrannosaur Canyon marks the return of Tom and Sally and the screen debut of Wyman Ford, a former CIA operative and a monk-in-training. After Tyrannosaur Canyon, Ford quits his monastic training facility, starts his own private detective business, and takes Broadbent’s position as the major character in Preston’s solo works. Later films featuring Ford include Blasphemy, Impact, and The Kraken Project.

Along with writers David Morrell, Steve Berry, Andy Harp, and James Rollins, Preston took part in the inaugural USO trip organized by the International Thriller Writers association in 2010. The group spent more than a week in Kuwait and Iraq after meeting with injured troops and dispensing books at National Navy Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center. This was “the first time that writers visited a conflict zone in the USO’s 69-year existence. “As usual, we learn a great lot from all of the terrific and committed individuals we encounter,” Preston said of the experience.

Preston has published numerous factual volumes of his own, mostly focusing on the history of the American Southwest, in addition to his collaborations with Child and his own fictional world. He has published articles on archaeology and paleontology in Smithsonian, Harper’s, The Atlantic, Natural History, and National Geographic, as well as for The New Yorker magazine.

Preston received a Doctor of Letters degree from Pomona College in May 2011. He has won literary prizes in both Europe and the United States. Preston served as a writer, editor, and publications manager at the American Museum of Natural History from 1978 until 1985. Preston relocated to New Mexico in 1986 and started working as a full-time writer.
