Douglas Preston Bio and Career:
Douglas Jerome Preston is an American journalist and novelist who was born on May 31, 1956. Despite the fact that he is most known for his thrillers written in partnership with Lincoln Child, he has also authored six books on his own, including the Wyman Ford series and a book called Jennie that was turned into a Disney film. He is the author of six nonfiction books about science and adventure, and he also contributes on occasion to Smithsonian, The New Yorker, and other periodicals. Preston was raised in Wellesley, Massachusetts, after being born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Preston started his writing career at the American Museum of Natural History in New York after graduating from Pomona College in Claremont, California, and the Cambridge School of Weston in Weston, Massachusetts.
The FBI Special Agent Pendergast’s character was developed by him and his frequent writing partner Lincoln Child. It can be found in several of their books, such as Relic, The Cabinet of Curiosities, Brimstone, and White Fire. Mount Dragon, Riptide, Thunderhead, and The Ice Limit are other books written by the Preston and Child partnership. The pair then collaborated to produce the Gideon Crew series, which includes the novels Gideon’s Sword, Gideon’s Corpse, and The Lost Island. Preston has attacked the actions of Italian prosecutor Giuliano Mignini[16] in the case of American student Amanda Knox, who was found guilty of killing British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia in 2007 along with two other defendants before being exonerated of all charges.
On 48 Hours on CBS in 2009, Preston said that the Knox case was “built on falsehoods, superstition, and wild conspiracy ideas.” In December 2009, after the announcement of the judgment, he spoke about his personal questioning by Mignini on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360°. According to Preston, Mignini “This prosecutor is quite nasty. He concocts hypotheses. He has an obsession with demonic sex.”
Preston made his literary debut for his solo career with Jennie, a book about a chimpanzee who is adopted by an American family. His subsequent book, The Codex, was a treasure hunt story with a tone that was much more reminiscent of his work with Child on thrillers. Tom Broadbent and Sally Colorado were first seen in The Codex. Tyrannosaur Canyon marks the return of Tom and Sally and the screen debut of Wyman Ford, a former CIA operative and a monk-in-training. After Tyrannosaur Canyon, Ford quits his monastic training facility, starts his own private detective business, and takes Broadbent’s position as the major character in Preston’s solo works. Later films featuring Ford include Blasphemy, Impact, and The Kraken Project.
Along with writers David Morrell, Steve Berry, Andy Harp, and James Rollins, Preston took part in the inaugural USO trip organized by the International Thriller Writers association in 2010. The group spent more than a week in Kuwait and Iraq after meeting with injured troops and dispensing books at National Navy Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center. This was “the first time that writers visited a conflict zone in the USO’s 69-year existence. “As usual, we learn a great lot from all of the terrific and committed individuals we encounter,” Preston said of the experience.
Preston has published numerous factual volumes of his own, mostly focusing on the history of the American Southwest, in addition to his collaborations with Child and his own fictional world. He has published articles on archaeology and paleontology in Smithsonian, Harper’s, The Atlantic, Natural History, and National Geographic, as well as for The New Yorker magazine.
Preston received a Doctor of Letters degree from Pomona College in May 2011. He has won literary prizes in both Europe and the United States. Preston served as a writer, editor, and publications manager at the American Museum of Natural History from 1978 until 1985. He was a contributor to Natural History magazine and the managing editor of the journal Curator.
Dinosaurs In The Attic: An Excursion into the American Museum of Natural History, a history of the museum he wrote in 1985, detailed the early explorers and excursions that took place there. Lincoln Child, who would later become his literary collaborator, served as the book’s editor at St. Martin’s Press. They immediately worked together on the 1995 thriller Relic, which takes place in a museum. In 1997, Paramount Pictures turned it into a movie starring Penelope Ann Miller, Tom Sizemore, and Linda Hunt.
Douglas Preston Profile-
Awards:
Preston relocated to New Mexico in 1986 and started working as a full-time writer. He followed Francisco Vásquez de Coronado’s bloody and futile hunt for the fabled Seven Cities of Gold on horseback in an effort to comprehend the first instance of European encounters with Native Americans in America. The book Cities of Gold: A Trek Across the American Southwest is the product of that 1,000-mile journey across the American Southwest. Since then, Preston has made several lengthy horseback rides following ancient or historical routes, for which he was admitted into the Long Riders’ Guild.
As the first Westerner to explore a forgotten Angkor temple, he has also taken part in expeditions in other regions of the globe, including one that took him and a small army of troops deep into Khmer Rouge-held territory in the Cambodian jungle. He was the first person in 3,000 years to enter the KV5 tomb in the Valley of the Kings, which contains an ancient Egyptian burial chamber. Preston took part in an expedition that resulted in the discovery of a long-lost city in an uncharted valley in the Mosquitia Mountains of Eastern Honduras.
He wrote about the mission in a nonfiction book titled The Lost City of the Monkey God: A True Story. He underwent care at the National Institutes of Health for mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, an incurable tropical illness that he and other expedition members caught while on that trip. He taught nonfiction writing at Princeton University in 1989 and 1990. The International Thriller Writers group has seen him participate.
