Dear Evan Hansen Bio and Career:

Stephen Chbosky will helm the 2021 American coming-of-age musical film Dear Evan Hansen, which was written by Steven Levenson and will be produced in the United States. It is an adaptation of the stage musical with the same name that was performed in 2015 and written by Levenson, Benj Pasek, and Justin Paul. Ben Platt is re-creating the performance that he first gave on stage six years ago in his role as the lead character. Alongside Julianne Moore and Amy Adams are also included in the ensemble cast members Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, Nik Dodani, Colton Ryan, and Danny Pino.

The film had its world debut as the opening night show at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2021[6], and it was distributed in theatres in the United States by Universal Pictures on September 24, 2021. The film flopped at the box office and garnered bad reviews from reviewers, who compared the picture to the stage musical in a manner that was not kind to the film. Platt’s performance in the film was not well received, despite the fact that he got plaudits for the same character in the stage musical. Many people accused his casting of being the result of nepotism in the production.

Evan Hansen, who is seventeen years old, has been diagnosed with social anxiety. His therapist suggests that he compose letters to himself in which he explains the reasons why “today will be a wonderful day.” After Evan injured his arm after falling out of a tree, Heidi, Evan’s mother, advises that he try asking others to sign his cast as a way to meet new people and make new friends. While at school, Evan writes a letter to himself, in which he ponders the possibility that no one would even notice if he vanished (“Waving Through a Window”).

Connor Murphy, a classmate of Evan’s, offers to sign his cast, taking up a considerable amount of space. When he discovers Evan’s letter, he becomes enraged because the letter makes reference to his sister Zoe, who is also the object of Evan’s affection. He runs out of the house with the letter in his hand, certain that Evan purposefully wrote it to antagonise him. After three days have passed, Evan is informed by Connor’s parents that their son committed suicide and that they will see him in the principal’s office. In spite of Evan’s best efforts to reveal the truth, Connor’s letter, which Evan had stolen, is interpreted by the two as a note of suicide intended to Evan. The fact that Connor’s name is on the envelope only serves to strengthen their mistaken conviction.

The Murphys have extended an invitation to Evan to visit their home. He makes up a narrative about how he broke his arm when he was with Connor in an orchard that the Murphys went to because Cynthia is putting him under a lot of pressure to make up a relationship between the two of them (“For Forever”). Evan enlists the help of a friend of the family, Jared, to concoct fake backdated emails between himself and Connor in order to validate his claim (“Sincerely, Me”). Due to their history together, Zoe is perplexed as to why Connor would include her name in his message before taking his own life (“Requiem”). Because Evan is unwilling to tell her the truth about his feelings for her, he uses Connor’s identity to express his feelings to her (“If I Could Tell Her”).

A fellow student named Alana Beck, who struggles with mental health difficulties similar to Evan’s, has the idea to form a student organisation called “The Connor Project,” which will be committed to preserving the legacy of Connor and will launch with an upcoming assembly (“The Anonymous Ones”). During the assembly, Evan tells the tale of the orchard while giving a speech about his struggles with loneliness and how he became friends with Connor. A video of the speech goes viral, and the words of Evan are seen as a source of hope for individuals who are struggling with mental illness (“You Will Be Found”). Zoe is touched by the wonderful reaction and thanks Evan for assisting her family.

To help support the reopening of the orchard, Evan and Alana have started a crowdsourcing effort via The Connor Project. In order for Evan to spend more time with the Murphys, he starts to put his mother, The Connor Project, and his treatment on the back burner. When Zoe spends the night at Evan’s place, she eventually tells him about her emotions for him, and the two begin a relationship shortly after (“Only Us”). While everything is going on, Heidi comes up to the Murphys’ house for dinner, and while they are eating, Cynthia and Larry make an offer to Evan to give him Connor’s college money. The rich Murphys offer Heidi and her family assistance, but she politely refuses their offer.

When Alana starts to wonder whether Evan is still friends with Connor, Evan sends her a letter from therapy and pretends that it is Connor’s message before committing himself. In order to help The Connor Project reach its financing target, Alana publishes the letter on her various social media platforms and calls it “The Anonymous Ones (Reprise)”. Some people have questioned on the internet why Connor would write a suicide note to Evan but not to the rest of his family, and they have accused the Murphys of mistreating Connor. Alana decides to remove the letter from social media after receiving negative feedback; however, it is too late for her to do so since the letter has already been distributed widely over the internet.

In the middle of an altercation between Cynthia and Larry, Evan finally admits the truth. Zoe and Evan decided to end their relationship after the devastating news that the Murphys would keep the truth of Connor’s death a secret out of respect for his memory (“Words Fail”). Evan opens up to his mother about his attempt at taking his own life by jumping out of the tree. In “So Big/So Small,” Heidi expresses her regret that she was unable to recognise the extent of Evan’s suffering and discusses the impact that his father’s absence had on him. Evan, desiring to accept responsibility for his actions, publishes a video in which he admits the truth.

Now that he is back by himself, he peruses the books that were Connor’s favourites and makes contact with others who were close to him. He shares the video with the Murphys, Alana, and Jared after receiving it, showing them Connor playing music when he was in rehabilitation (“A Little Closer”). Evan arranges to meet Zoe in the newly reopened orchard that has been named in Connor’s honour. They make up, and Zoe tells Evan that she had always wanted him to see the orchard, which was Connor’s favourite spot in the world. In the song “A Little Closer (Reprise),” Evan encourages himself to go on with his life by writing a letter to himself in which he promises not to keep secrets or tell lies.

In November of 2018, Universal Pictures made the decision to buy the film rights to the musical. They then hired Stephen Chbosky to helm the film, and they asked Steven Levenson, the writer of the musical, to adapt the tale into a script for the film. Marc Platt and Adam Siegel would take on the role of producers for the programme, while Stacey Mindich, who is already serving as the show’s main producer, Benj Pasek, and Justin Paul would join Michael Bederman and Levenson as executive producers for the project.

Ben Platt, who created the part of Evan Hansen on stage, was set to reprise his role for the film in June of 2020, while Kaitlyn Dever started discussions to play as Zoe Murphy in the film adaptation of the musical. On June 18, 2020, Platt said that he had every intention of playing the part again, unless the COVID-19 epidemic caused production delays. Stephen Chbosky said that the primary intention behind the production of the movie was to record and forever memorialise Platt’s performance, noting that “His comprehension of the persona is both comprehensive and in-depth to an incredible degree.

It was impossible for me to picture anybody else doing it. It’s his part. Regarding this matter, I had really strong feelings. And I can honestly say that I never even gave it a second thought.” Later, he said that this was the reason why the opening song from the musical was left out of the film adaptation “Anyone Have a Map?,” in which she explains that “We’re Really on Evan’s Journey.” It opened the door for us to get acquainted with all of the characters via Evan. Additionally, it connects the spectator to an aspect of Evan that is really important.”

Both Kaitlyn Dever, who was officially cast as Zoe Murphy, and Amandla Stenberg, who joined the cast as Alana Beck, a part that has been expanded upon for the film, were added in August of 2020. In the same month, Nik Dodani was cast as Jared Kleinman (now Kalwani), and Colton Ryan was cast as Connor Murphy, a part that Ryan understudied on Broadway. Both actors joined the cast of “The Book of Mormon” in October. Near the end of that month, Amy Adams and Danny Pino were added to the cast in the roles of Cynthia and Larry Murphy, respectively. For the purpose of the movie, Larry Murphy was re-imagined as Larry Mora, the stepfather of their children. Julianne Moore and DeMarius Copes were both added to the cast of the movie in September of the year 2020.

Moore was chosen to portray the role of Heidi Hansen, while Copes, who was making his acting debut in a film, was selected as Oliver, a friend of Zoe Murphy’s who is also a brand new character developed particularly for the movie. In the same month, Gerald Caesar signed on to play Josh, one of the high school kids in the movie. In October of the year 2020, a newbie by the name of Liz Kate was added to the cast of the movie in the role of Gemma. Isaac Cole Powell joined the cast of the movie in November 2020, playing the role of Rhys, a jock from his high school.
