Koontz pointed out problems with the program and methods in which aid wasn’t distributed to those who needed it.
When Koontz was a senior in high school, he proposed to his longtime sweetheart and current wife, Gerda. He said his mother and his wife, Gerda, served as inspiration for the strong female protagonists in his writings. He and Gerda had agreed that he would take a five-year break from teaching during which she would provide financial assistance while he focused on his writing. The plan was successful, and he now spends more than 60 hours each week writing.

Since his novel features a character with a service dog, the charity showed him their rigorous training methods. The couple met Trixie, a golden retriever who had been through most of their training with CCI but didn’t quite make it and decided to take her in as a pet.
