Daniel Handler Bio and Career:
Daniel Handler is an American author and musician who was born on February 28, 1970. Under the pen name Lemony Snicket, he is best known for his children’s books A Series of Unfortunate Events and All the Wrong Questions. The first was transformed into a 2004 Nickelodeon movie and a 2017–2019 Netflix series. The son of Louis Handler, an accountant, and Sandra Handler, a former dean of the City College of San Francisco, Handler was born in San Francisco, California.
His father had fled to Germany as a Jew. Hugh Walpole, a British author, is distantly related to his mother. When asked about his early religious background, Handler replied, “I had a fairly conventional Reform Jewish upbringing, I guess. Rebecca Handler, his younger sister, is related to him. He went to Lowell High School, Herbert Hoover Middle School, and Commodore Sloat Elementary School.
In 1992, he received his degree from Wesleyan University. He earned the 1992 Connecticut Student Poet Prize, which he claims he obtained by plagiarising Elizabeth Bishop and received it. He is a former member of the San Francisco Boys Chorus. Under his name, six of Handler’s significant works have been released. Because of its subject matter and tone, his debut book, The Basic Eight, was rejected by many publishers. According to Handler, the book was rejected 37 times until it was finally released in 1999. Under the pen name Lemony Snicket, Handler penned the 13 best-selling novels in A Series of Unfortunate Events from 1999 to 2006.
The orphans’ narratives and biographies are written by Snicket. Before returning the narration duties to the series’ original narrator, Tim Curry, Handler narrated the audiobooks for the first three books in the series. In movies, Handler has also had some success. He wrote the screenplays for Kill the Poor, which was adapted from the Joel Rose novel, and Rick, which was based on the Verdi opera Rigoletto.
Although Handler participated in the creation of the screenplay for the movie adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, she was ultimately cut from the production. In May 2003, Robert Gordon took over after he had written eight draughts of the Sonnenfeld script. The adjustments that were made to Handler’s original screenplay were accepted by him. “The Writers Guild of America offered me screenwriting credit for the movie, but I declined it because I didn’t write it, Handler stated. I believed it would be disrespectful to the man who did.”
Brad Silberling and Handler both contributed a commentary track for the DVD release. In his role as Lemony Snicket, he mocks the fictional character as an impostor and chooses to play the accordion and sing songs about leeches rather than watch the movie. He expresses pity for the Baudelaire kids frequently during the track and makes it seem as though the director is holding him against his will so that he can provide the commentary.
A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix was written by Handler, who also contributed lyrics to the theme tune, which changes with each episode. Numerous awards have been given to the program, including a Peabody Award for excellence in children’s and youth programming in 2017.
Under the pen name Lemony Snicket, Handler published the four-book All the Wrong Questions series from 2012 to 2015. The volumes examine Snicket’s youth and V.F.D. apprenticeship in the struggling town of Stain’d-by-the-Sea. Along with his two Snicket series, he has authored additional children’s books under the Snicket pen name, as well as titles for young readers including The Composer is Dead and The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming.
They occupy an Edwardian home in San Francisco. Regarding his wealth and the expectations it raises, Handler has exhibited ambivalence. He frequently contributes money to good causes. Handler has also backed the Occupy Wall Street movement and gave $1,000,000 to Planned Parenthood with his wife.
Handler identifies as an atheist and secular humanist. He claims that while attending college, his “feminist consciousness” evolved. Under his own name, Handler has written adult novels, a stage play, and other children’s books under the pseudonym Lemony Snicket. Many publishers turned down his debut book, a work of satirical fiction called The Basic Eight, because of its grim subject matter. In addition, Handler has performed the accordion in a number of bands and can be seen on The Magnetic Fields’ CD 69 Love Songs.
