Curtis Slwa is a American activist, radio talk show presenter, and founder and chief executive officer of the nonprofit group Guardian Angels, which focuses on the prevention of unarmed crime. Born on March 26, 1954 in the United States of America. Sliwa was the Republican candidate for the mayoral election in New York City in 2021, but he lost to Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams. Adams went on to become the mayor of New York City.

He moved his activities to Buffalo in the early 1980s and was often critical of the local police department’s policies and procedures during this time. Frank Melvin, a member of the Guardian Angels, was fatally shot by a Newark police officer in December 1981. The officer claimed that they mistook Melvin’s unzipping of his jacket to display his Guardian Angels emblem as a threat and fatally shot him as a result.
Melvin was the only person killed in this incident. Sliwa asserted that the killing of Melvin, an African American, was racially motivated and that it had been done by a white officer who was being protected by the police department, rather than by the Hispanic officer who was identified as the shooter. The Hispanic officer had been identified as the perpetrator of the shooting. Both cops were exonerated by a grand jury in Essex County after an investigation into Melvin’s death.
Sliwa was abducted and murdered by two armed men on June 19, 1992, shortly after boarding a cab that had been taken in Manhattan. Sliwa was picked up by the cab close to his residence in the East Village. Suddenly, a shooter who had been hidden in the front passenger seat leapt out and opened fire, striking Sliwa in the groyne and both legs. The attempt to abduct Sliwa was unsuccessful because she was able to escape by climbing out of the front window of the moving vehicle. Sliwa had surgery to treat her internal ailments as well as the lesions on her legs.
In the end, federal prosecutors decided to prosecute John A. Gotti, the son of John Gotti, the boss of the Gambino crime family, with the attempted murder in addition to a wide range of other offences. According to the prosecution, Gotti’s temper was blown by comments that Sliwa made on his radio broadcast regarding Gotti’s father.

Michael Yannotti, a Gotti accomplice, was also accused of shooting Sliwa in connection with the event but was found not guilty. Despite this, Yannotti was found guilty of racketeering and received a sentence of twenty years in prison. Despite this, Manhattan Federal Judge Shira Scheindlin said that the evidence pointed to Yannotti being the perpetrator of the shooting.
