Curtis Sliwa Bio and Career:
Curtis Slwa is a American activist, radio talk show presenter, and founder and chief executive officer of the nonprofit group Guardian Angels, which focuses on the prevention of unarmed crime. Born on March 26, 1954 in the United States of America. Sliwa was the Republican candidate for the mayoral election in New York City in 2021, but he lost to Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams. Adams went on to become the mayor of New York City.
Canarsie, Brooklyn was the location where Curtis Sliwa’s birth took place on March 26, 1954. He was born into a Catholic family of Polish and Italian origin. There are two of his sisters. He started his education at the Jesuit high school Brooklyn Prep, but was ultimately expelled there. He went on to complete his secondary education at Canarsie High School.
When he was younger, he worked as a delivery boy for the Daily News. After rescuing many people from a burning building while he was on his paper route, the newspaper presented him with the title of “Newsboy of the Year” and gave him a trip to the White House as a reward for his bravery. In the years before he established the Guardian Angels, he worked as the night manager of a McDonald’s restaurant in the Bronx located on Fordham Road.
Sliwa established the “Magnificent 13” in May of 1977. This was a civilian organisation with the mission of reducing the amount of violence and crime on the New York City Subway. During that time period, the city was going through a particularly violent crime spree. In 1979, as a result of the group’s expansion, they were given the new name the Guardian Angels. Strong responses, both good and negative, were elicited by the acts taken by the group.
Eighty percent of the Guardian Angels’ members were of either black or Hispanic descent, according to the organization’s membership roster. Before being allowed to serve in an unarmed capacity, every member of the organisation was needed to complete karate instruction and satisfy the prerequisites set out by the law for citizens’ arrest. The crimson beret that Sliwa wears is a part of the Guardian Angels’ standard uniform.
An inquiry of the Guardian Angels was initiated by Mayor Ed Koch, a critic of both Sliwa and the group. According to The Washington Post, the results of the study were “so good that the Guardian Angels may soon be accorded some type of official status.” A rare early backer of the group was Mario Cuomo, who served as the then-Lieutenant Governor of New York. Mario Cuomo was cited as remarking that “[t]hey are a finer manifestation of virtue than our city deserves.”
Sliwa revealed in 1992 that he and The Guardian Angels staged heroic rescues in the subway for the purpose of gaining notoriety. He also revealed that he had lied about being abducted by three off-duty transit police officers, but said that he was sorry for his mistake.

He moved his activities to Buffalo in the early 1980s and was often critical of the local police department’s policies and procedures during this time. Frank Melvin, a member of the Guardian Angels, was fatally shot by a Newark police officer in December 1981. The officer claimed that they mistook Melvin’s unzipping of his jacket to display his Guardian Angels emblem as a threat and fatally shot him as a result.
Melvin was the only person killed in this incident. Sliwa asserted that the killing of Melvin, an African American, was racially motivated and that it had been done by a white officer who was being protected by the police department, rather than by the Hispanic officer who was identified as the shooter. The Hispanic officer had been identified as the perpetrator of the shooting. Both cops were exonerated by a grand jury in Essex County after an investigation into Melvin’s death.
Sliwa was abducted and murdered by two armed men on June 19, 1992, shortly after boarding a cab that had been taken in Manhattan. Sliwa was picked up by the cab close to his residence in the East Village. Suddenly, a shooter who had been hidden in the front passenger seat leapt out and opened fire, striking Sliwa in the groyne and both legs. The attempt to abduct Sliwa was unsuccessful because she was able to escape by climbing out of the front window of the moving vehicle. Sliwa had surgery to treat her internal ailments as well as the lesions on her legs.
In the end, federal prosecutors decided to prosecute John A. Gotti, the son of John Gotti, the boss of the Gambino crime family, with the attempted murder in addition to a wide range of other offences. According to the prosecution, Gotti’s temper was blown by comments that Sliwa made on his radio broadcast regarding Gotti’s father.
However, following a total of three attempts to put Gotti on trial, the most recent of which took place on September 20, 2005, three separate juries were unable to reach a unanimous decision to convict Gotti of any of the charges that had been brought against him, and consequently, the charges against him were dismissed. The jurors afterwards said to the press that they did think he was involved in the shooting of Sliwa. The accusations against Gotti were dropped when the prosecutors decided not to retry him in court. Sliwa said that he would file a claim for damages in a civil court.
Michael Yannotti, a Gotti accomplice, was also accused of shooting Sliwa in connection with the event but was found not guilty. Despite this, Yannotti was found guilty of racketeering and received a sentence of twenty years in prison. Despite this, Manhattan Federal Judge Shira Scheindlin said that the evidence pointed to Yannotti being the perpetrator of the shooting.
