Brett James Bio and Career:
Brett James has established himself as one of the most successful songwriters in Nashville for the better part of twenty years. He has collaborated on the composition of 26 songs that have gone on to become number one successes, and he was awarded a Grammy for his contribution to the song “Jesus, Take the Wheel” by Carrie Underwood (which won Best Country Song in 2006). In addition to that, the ASCAP Country Songwriter of the Year award has been bestowed to him thrice.
James has made the decision to go back to his roots as a singer and composer, despite the fact that he remains one of the most successful professional songwriters (he was a co-writer on two of Underwood’s most recent songs, “Love Wins” and “Drinking Alone”). I Am Now is the title of the new EP that he wrote and produced himself. This is the first time in over two decades that he has released new music. In addition to this, James is planning to release a second extended play (EP) in the month of June.
James, who was born in Columbia, Missouri, first attended medical school before opting to pursue a career as a recording artist in the music industry instead. James is currently 50 years old. In 1992, he made the trip to Nashville, where he soon after acquired a recording contract with Career Records (a subsidiary of Arista Nashville). In 1995, he published an album under his own name named Brett James, and over the following eight years, he had five songs that made it to the top of the country chart on the Billboard website.
James is most recognized for his enormous amount of success as a professional composer (that is, for creating songs for other singers), despite the fact that he has also released music under his own name. His other number one country hits include “Somethin’ Bad” (performed by Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood), “Blessed” (performed by Martina McBride), “Cowboy Casanova,” “Church Bells,” and “Something in the Water” (performed by Carrie Underwood), “The Truth” (performed by Jason Aldean), “I Hold On” (performed by Dierks Bentley), “It’s America” (performed by (Jessica Andrews).
In addition, James has contributed to the composition of many popular songs, including “Mr. Know It All” (performed by Kelly Clarkson), “Life After You,” and “Start of Something Good” (Daughtry). Additionally, a few of his country tunes were successful enough to cross over to the pop charts.
James created all of the songs on his newest EP, titled I Am Now, and recorded them at Nashville’s SmoakStack Studios. James also served as the album’s sole producer. This EP showcases his powerful and easily recognizable lead vocals, as well as a soulful taste that blends well with his country flair. The extended play has songs such as “Wait,” “Still On My Mind,” and “Lonely Ain’t So Lonely,” in addition to the title track, “I Am Now,” and the focal track, “True Believer.”

We are excited to conduct this new question-and-answer session with James. He discusses the process of composing and recording his new extended play (EP). In addition, when questioned about it, James will talk about how the Coronavirus shutdown has affected the songwriting community in Nashville as well as the music industry there. It is interesting to hear him discuss how professional songwriters are making the most of a challenging circumstance by creating songs online with the help of current technologies.
Here is the transcript of our conversation with Brett James: You, as an artist, have just put out new music for the first time in a significant amount of time. What led you to the decision to restart your career as an artist? In the year that I turned 50, I had one of those birthday epiphanies, and I’d want to share it with you, Brett James.
I had the idea… I had spent a significant amount of time creating songs for other artists, and I felt the need to reevaluate everything. And I really doubt if my children have ever heard my voice (as an artist). They have heard me record a number of demos for other people, but they have never heard me sing for myself in any of those recordings. I hadn’t released any of my own music in close to 25 years at that point (laughs). Therefore, maybe it is time to stop moving about and really carry out that task.
I was motivated to accomplish it without giving any thought to the genre or to my previous experience writing radio songs. I am aware of the tone of voice that is most authentic to me, and that was the only opinion I had previously formed. The EP ended up being a record that I would describe as having a Nashville soul vibe to it… I suppose you could call myself a soul singer by nature. So I decided to start writing it and see where my imagination would take me.
I am a professional composer, and I took some time off from my regular job to write about 11 songs in the span of two weeks. And during those two weeks, I had as much pleasure creating music as I have ever had in my whole life. Therefore, it was the reason for carrying it out.
It required a significant amount of effort to have the album created and to locate the appropriate individuals to release it with. We were eventually able to release the EP at the beginning of this month, and the first single, “True Believer,” was published back in January. Simply, I’ve been having a great time with it… it’s been exciting putting the EP out there and watching how people react to it. In addition, we will release our second extended play (EP) in the month of June.
