Brandon Sanderson is a well-known American author of epic fantasy and science fiction. He entered the world on December 19, 1975. The majority of his fame stems from the fact that the majority of his fantasy novels (including the Mistborn trilogy and The Stormlight Archive) are set in the fictional world of the Cosmere.
Other than the Cosmere, he has written other series for younger readers, including The Reckoners, the Skyward series, and the Alcatraz series. After deciding to write seriously, Brandon got a job as a night desk clerk at a hotel that didn’t mind his bringing his laptop to work. In spite of what he calls a “pretty miserable social life,” he managed to finish seven novels while in college. Brandon had a fantastic time working on BYU’s science fiction/fantasy magazine, The Leading Edge, as a volunteer. During his senior year, he served as Editor in Chief, during which time he read a lot of submissions and made some friends for life.
In a workshop taught by David Farland, author of the Runelords series, Brandon gained valuable insight into the commercial side of writing. Dave suggested that Brandon go to cons like WorldCon and World Fantasy to meet people in the field. In the beginning, it was only Brandon and a few other pals who wanted to write. Through attending conventions, he was able to connect with both his current agency and one of his editors.
In the midst of his graduate studies at BYU in 2003, Brandon received a call from Tor editor Moshe Feder, who wanted to buy one of Brandon’s works. Brandon was pleasantly surprised and happy to receive the offer, despite the fact that he had submitted the book over a year and a half prior and had all but given up hope of hearing anything. Brandon’s novel Elantris was finally released in May of 2005.
Over the subsequent years, Tor also released Brandon’s The Alloy of Law, Warbreaker, and The Way of Kings, the first book in a planned ten-volume series titled The Stormlight Archive, following the success of his Mistborn trilogy.
