Brandon Sanderson Bio and Career:

American epic fantasy and science fiction writer Brandon Sanderson was born on December 19, 1975. His fantasy works, including the Mistborn trilogy and The Stormlight Archive, are mostly set in the Cosmere fictional setting, for which he is best known. He has created a number of young adults and juvenile series in addition to the Cosmere, such as The Reckoners, the Skyward series, and the Alcatraz series. In addition, he is renowned for concluding Robert Jordan’s epic fantasy book The Wheel of Time. He has also written other fantasy graphic novel series, such as White Sand and Dark One. The oldest of four children, Brandon Sanderson was born on December 19, 1975, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

As a youth, Sanderson developed a fondness for reading high fantasy books, and he made many early efforts to write his own tales.  In 1994, the year he received his high school diploma, he enrolled at Brigham Young University to study biochemistry. He took a leave of absence for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for two years, from 1995 to 1997, and was sent on a voluntary mission to South Korea. Throughout his college and graduate degrees, Sanderson continuously wrote; by 2003, he had written twelve books, but no publisher had agreed to publish any of them.

Moshe Feder, the editor of Tor Novels, contacted him when he was enrolled in a Ph.D. school at BYU and expressed interest in one of his books. A year and a half ago, Sanderson had turned in the manuscript for his sixth book, Elantris.  Elantris was released on April 21, 2005, by Tor Books to mostly approve reviews.  The first book in his Mistborn fantasy trilogy, Mistborn: The Final Empire, was out in 2006 following that. In it, “allowances”—individuals with the capacity to ‘burn’ metals and alloys after eating them—gain increased senses and control over powerful supernatural forces.

When Robert Jordan’s widow and editor Harriet McDougal picked Sanderson to finish writing the last novels in Jordan’s epic fantasy saga The Wheel of Time after Jordan passed away in late 2007, Sanderson gained notoriety. After reading Sanderson’s first Mistborn book, The Final Empire, McDougal urged him to complete the series. The announcement was made on December 7, 2007, by Tor Books.  After considering what was required to wrap up the series, Sanderson and Tor declared on March 30, 2009, that three final novels, rather than simply one, will be released.

Warbreaker was first released in 2009 by Tor Books after being serialized on author Brandon Sanderson’s website from 2006 to 2009.  Alcatraz Versus the Knights of Crystallia, the third Alcatraz novel, was released the same year. In 2010, Sanderson released The Way of Kings, the first book in The Stormlight Archive, a projected ten-book trilogy. On the New York Times bestseller list for hardcover fiction, it reached position seven. Soon later, Alcatraz Versus the Shattered Lens, the fourth Alcatraz book, was published.

Infinity Blade: Awakening, an e-novella based on the action role-playing iOS video game Infinity Blade created by Chair Entertainment and Epic Games, was completed by him in October 2011. He released Mistborn: The Alloy of Law, the conclusion of the Mistborn trilogy, in November 2011. Originally intended to be a stand-alone book 300 years after the first trilogy, it was subsequently extended into a quartet of books.  On the combined print and e-book New York Times Best Seller list, it debuted at position nine.

Legion, a science fiction novella, and The Emperor’s Soul, a short story, were both released by Sanderson on August 31, 2012.[39] 2013 saw the release of two fresh young adult series by Sanderson. These series comprised The Rithmatist and Steelheart, the first book in The Reckoners series.  Words of Radiance, the second volume in The Stormlight Archive, was released in March 2014.

Legion: Skin Deep, the second novella in the Legion series, was released by Subterranean Press later that year. It was a preliminary Hugo Award nomination for 2015, however, it was eliminated from consideration.  The Reckoners’ Firefight, the second novel, was released in January 2015.  Firefight received the Best Young Adult—Speculative Whitney Award in 2015. It was a nominee for the 2015 AML Award for Young Adult Novel and finished ninth in the Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction category of the Goodreads Choice Awards. As a straight follow-up to The Alloy of Law, Sanderson released Mistborn: Shadows of Self nine months later.

The Well of Ascension, the second novel in the Mistborn series, was released by him in 2007. Later on, in the same year,  Sanderson released the young-adult book Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians, which is about a kid called Alcatraz who likes to smash things. Alcatraz engages a gang of wicked librarians who are determined to rule the world. His first “rules of magic” were released in 2007, and the second and third were released in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The Hero of Ages, the third and concluding novel in the Mistborn trilogy, and Alcatraz Versus the Scrivener’s Bones, the second book in the Alcatraz series, were both released in 2008. Along with Howard Tayler and Dan Wells, he launched the podcast Writing Excuses in the same year.

Sanderson returned to BYU after finishing his missionary duty and switched his major to English literature. In order to write while working, Sanderson accepted a position as a night auditor at a nearby hotel in Provo, Utah, while still a student. Ken Jennings, who almost ten years later rose to fame during his 74-game winning run on the American game show Jeopardy!, shared a dorm with Sanderson at BYU. Sanderson earned a Bachelor of Arts from BYU in 2000. His graduate studies continued, and in 2004 he earned an M.A. in English with a focus on creative writing. Sanderson worked for Leading Edge at BYU and was its editor-in-chief for a year. Leading Edge is a semi-professional speculative fiction journal that the institution publishes.

In 2006, Sanderson wed Emily Bushman, a BYU alumna and English, Spanish, and ESL instructor who subsequently served as his business manager. They live in American Fork, Utah, and have three boys. He developed Sanderson’s Laws of Magic and made “hard magic” and “soft magic” systems more well-known. In 2008, Sanderson launched a podcast called Writing Excuses with writer Dan Wells and cartoonist Howard Tayler that discussed webcomics and genre writing. The film rights to the whole Cosmere world of Sanderson were leased to the American media firm DMG Entertainment in 2016. With 185,341 supporters contributing $41,754,153, Sanderson’s March 2022 Kickstarter campaign became the most successful in history.
