Blake Mycoskie Bio and Career:
Blake Mycoskie was born in Arlington, Texas, to Mike Mycoskie, an orthopedic physician, and his wife, Pam Mycoskie, a novelist and writer. After attending Arlington Martin High School for a while, he went on to graduate from St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin, Texas, in the year 1995. Mycoskie, who started playing tennis at the age of eleven, joined Southern Methodist University in 1995 on a partial tennis scholarship and decided to pursue a dual degree in philosophy and business administration.
Mycoskie left SMU after suffering an Achilles tendon injury as a sophomore, which basically terminated his tennis career. He went on to start his first firm, Laundry, which he has since sold. Initially concentrating on SMU, which at the time did not have an on-campus dry cleaning service, Laundry grew to employ more than 40 employees, serve three colleges, and generate roughly $1 million in revenue. In 1999, Mycoskie sold the firm to his business partner.
Following graduation from college, Mycoskie relocated to Nashville and established Mycoskie Media, an outdoor billboard firm that specialised in the promotion of country music. The firm became profitable very rapidly, and it was purchased by Clear Channel nine months after it was founded.
Mycoskie and his sister, Paige Mycoskie, auditioned for the cast of the reality television show Survivor in 2001. They were informed about The Amazing Race by a member of the Survivor production crew, which had not yet premiered, and they decided to seek a team spot on that program instead. They participated in the second season of The Amazing Race and ended in third place, four minutes short of winning a million dollars. Later in the year, Mycoskie relocated to Los Angeles.
The cable network Reality Central was co-founded by Mycoskie and Larry Namer, who was also a founding member of E! Entertainment Television. Mycoskie lives in Los Angeles. The network began broadcasting in 2003 after raising $25 million from venture capitalists and other members of reality show casts. The network’s original material and reruns of reality television were the network’s primary goals. After Rupert Murdoch created the Fox Reality Channel and outbid Reality Central for sponsors and programming in 2005, the network collapsed. Despite its middling success, the network was forced to close its doors.
Determined to pursue an entrepreneurial career, Mycoskie teamed up with the owners of TrafficSchool.com to launch DriversEd Direct, an online driver’s education service that also included behind-the-wheel instruction in hybrid and sport utility vehicles, among other things. In order to promote DriversEdDirect, he founded Closer Marketing Group, a marketing business located in Santa Monica that specializes in brand building and viral marketing strategies.
Blake Mycoskie Profile-
Awards:
In 2006, Mycoskie traveled to Argentina for a holiday. During his visit, he met an American lady who was a volunteer with a non-profit organization that gave shoes to underprivileged children. Mycoskie spent many days going from town to village with the group as well as traveling on his own for the first time. During a 2011 piece for The Business Insider, he stated, “(I experienced) the extreme pockets of poverty just outside the bustling metropolis.”
“It had a significant impact on raising my consciousness. Certainly, I was aware that underprivileged children all around the globe often walked barefoot, but this was the first time I had really seen the consequences of this practice: blisters, ulcers, and infections in the flesh of my own feet.” Mycoskie returned to the United States and established Shoes for Better Tomorrows as a result of his inspiration. He devised the “One for One” business model, which allowed him to build a for-profit firm that could provide new shoes to poor children on a continuous basis. For every pair of shoes sold, the company would send a new pair of shoes to a deserving kid.
The shoes, which were inspired by the Argentinian Alpargata, were designed to appeal to a global audience while both supporting the company’s objective and generating profit. They are considered an early example of social business. Founded in 2006, Shoes for a Better Tomorrow (later abbreviated to TOMS) has distributed more than 10,000,000 pairs of shoes to those in need worldwide. The sneakers are available in more than 1000 retailers throughout the world.
In 2011, Toms extended their “One for One” program to include eyeglasses. For every pair of sunglasses bought, a person in need receives sight-saving medical care, prescription glasses, or surgery, according to the company’s “One for One” program. Even while Mycoskie was conceptualizing the concept, a “Sight Giving Partner,” the Seva Foundation, was recruited to operate the real program, which began in Nepal and then expanded to Tibet and Cambodia. In a 2012 interview with Fast Company, Mycoskie said that collaborating with Seva was beneficial to his career.
“In the past, I’ve been there when (patients) have had surgery… and I’ve distributed the glasses. Nonetheless, as Toms expands, the focus must shift away from ‘What is Blake’s most personal and delightful experience?’ and toward ‘What is the greatest need?'” In 2011, Mycoskie released the book Start Something That Matters, which is a collection of essays. There, he discussed the benefits of social entrepreneurship and the concept of businesses using their profits and company assets to make charitable donations or participate in other charitable endeavors, drawing on his personal experience with Toms to demonstrate both the intangible and tangible benefits of doing good for others.
Mycoskie vowed that for every copy of Start Something That Matters that was sold, he would donate a children’s book to a kid in need. Mycoskie first utilized half of the earnings from the book to fund awards for up-and-coming entrepreneurs, then in late 2012, he boosted this to 100 percent of the royalties. The book went on to become a best-selling business book in the New York Times, as well as the number one best-seller in the advice category in the New York Times.
