Born on October 3, 1954, Alfred Charles Sharpton Jr. is a politician, civil rights activist, Baptist clergyman, talk show host, and politician in the United States. Cato and his cousin were treated shortly after being extricated from under the automobile by a city ambulance. Rumours that the private ambulance had declined to treat Cato spurred local Caribbean-American and African-American residents to riot for four straight days. After Yankel Rosenbaum, an Australian visitor student was stabbed and died by a member of a crowd as some screamed: “Kill the Jew” and “get the Jews out,” black teenagers robbed stores, battered Jews in the street,[32] and clashed with groups of Jews, throwing rocks and bottles at one another.
Soon after the riot, Sharpton led 400 demonstrators in a march through Crown Heights and in front of the Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic movement’s headquarters “Streets whose? “No justice, no peace!” and “Our streets!” “despite Mayor David Dinkins’ efforts to prevent the march from taking place. By saying things like “If the Jews want to get it on, tell them to pin their yarmulkes back and come over to my place,” some analysts felt Sharpton heightened tensions.
Sharpton commended Cato in his eulogy, saying, “The rest of the world will tell us he died accidentally. It was a social accident, indeed. Allowing an apartheid ambulance service in the middle of Crown Heights is an accident. Apartheid is the problem, not anti-Semitism… All we want to express is what Jesus said: You have to pay for offending one of these tiny ones. Your actions are repaid.” Although he asserted that his marches were nonviolent, Sharpton has recently acknowledged that his words and tone “occasionally inflamed tensions.”
Sharpton admitted that he might have “done more to heal rather than harm” in a lecture he gave to a Reform Jewish audience in 2019. When Coretta Scott King called him at the time, she reportedly said, “Sometimes you are tempted to speak to the applause of the crowd rather than the heights of the cause, and you will say cheap things to get cheap applause rather than do high things to raise the nation higher.” Coretta Scott King was a prominent civil rights activist.
Sharpton led a number of marches in Bensonhurst in the days and weeks that followed the assault and death. Before that protest started, Michael Riccardi, a local, stabbed Sharpton in the chest in an attempt to murder him. After healing from his injuries, Sharpton subsequently begged the judge for mercy when Riccardi was given a sentence.
