Wiz Khalifa Bio and Career:

Wiz Khalifa (born September 8, 1987) is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. In 2006, he published Show and Prove, his debut album, and in 2007, he signed with Warner Bros. Records. His Eurodance-influenced tune “Say Yeah” charted on the Rhythmic Top 40 and Hot Rap Tracks charts in 2008, marking his first minor hit.

Thomaz severed ways with Warner Bros. in November 2009 and released his second album, Deal or No Deal. In April 2010, he released the free mixtape Kush and Orange Juice, and later signed with Atlantic Records.  With his first single for Atlantic, “Black and Yellow,” Thomaz took a more radio-friendly, pop-oriented approach. The song, a tribute to his birthplace of Pittsburgh, debuted at number 100 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually reached number one. The song was the lead single from his third studio album, Rolling Papers, which was released in March 2011 and featured the Top 40 songs “Roll Up” and “No Sleep.”

The success of the album was followed by the release of O.N.I.F.C. in December 2012, which featured the singles “Work Hard, Play Hard” and “Remember You” (featuring the Weeknd). Wiz’s fifth studio album, Blacc Hollywood, was released in August 2014, with the lead single “We Dem Boyz” as the lead single. In March 2015, he released “See You Again” (with Charlie Puth) for the soundtrack of the film Furious 7, which spent 12 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

Khalifa was born Cameron Jibril Thomaz in Minot, North Dakota on September 8, 1987 to military parents. Khalifa’s parents split when he was three years old. He grew up as a military brat, as his parents’ military service required him to relocate frequently. Khalifa grew up in Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan before moving to Pittsburgh with his mother in 1996 and attending Taylor Allderdice High School. Before he was a teenager, Khalifa began writing and performing his own lyrics soon after coming to Pittsburgh.

Khalifa is an Arabic word that means “successor,” and wisdom, which was reduced to Wiz when Khalifa was a little boy. According to Khalifa, the moniker stemmed from being dubbed “young Wiz” because “I was good at whatever I did,” and “my granddad is Muslim, so he gave me that name because he felt like that’s what I was doing with my music.” On his seventeenth birthday, he received a tattoo of his stage name.  He began consistently recording his music in I.D. Labs by the age of 15.

The studio’s management was so taken by Khalifa’s lyrics that they agreed to let him record for free.Wiz Khalifa’s participation to a mixtape of various young Pittsburgh musicians piqued the notice of Rostrum Records owner Benjy Grinberg in 2004. When Grinberg finally met the 16-year-old artist, he knew he wanted to work with him right away, telling HitQuarters later, “Even though he wasn’t fully developed, you could just tell that he was a diamond in the rough, and that with some polishing, guidance, and backing, he could become something special.

” Soon after, Khalifa joined with the label and embarked on a seven-year journey of artist development.  In 2005, Khalifa released Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania, his first mixtape. In 2006, he released his first full-length album, Show and Prove, which was inspired by the mixtape. Khalifa was named a “artist to watch” by Rolling Stone magazine that year.

Khalifa signed to Warner Bros. Records in 2007 and released two mixtapes through Rostrum Records: Grow Season, hosted by DJ Green Lantern, on July 4, 2007, and Prince of the City 2, on November 20, 2007. “Say Yeah,” his first Warner Bros. song, peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Rhythmic Top 40 music chart and number 20 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Tracks list. Alice Deejay’s song “Better Off Alone” is sampled in the song.

With music from Underworld’s “Born Slippy,” Usher’s “Love in This Club,” and the Cure’s “In Between Days,” Khalifa’s vocals from “Say Yeah” appear near the end of Pittsburgh mashup producer Girl Talk’s 2008 album, Feed the Animals.  On August 2, 2008, Khalifa performed with The Game, David Banner, and Play-n-Skillz at U92’s Summer Jam at the USANA Amphitheatre in West Valley City, Utah. On Rostrum Records, Khalifa released the mixtapes Star Power and Flight School in September 2008 and April 2009, respectively.
