William Gibson Bio and Career:

The science fiction subgenre known as cyberpunk was popularised by American-Canadian author and essayist William Ford Gibson, born on March 17, 1948. His writing career began in the late 1970s, and his early works were noir, near-future tales that investigated how technology, cybernetics, and computer networks affected people—a “combination of lowlife and high tech”—and helped to develop an iconography for the information age before the Internet became widely used in the 1990s. In his short story “Burning Chrome” from 1982, Gibson first used the word “cyberspace” to refer to “widespread, linked digital technology.” His renowned first book Neuromancer further popularised the idea. It has been said that these early Gibson novels “renovated” science fiction in the 1980s.

William Ford Gibson was born in Conway, South Carolina, a coastal city, and spent most of his early years in Wytheville, Virginia, his parent’s hometown in the Appalachian Mountains. Due to his father’s job as the manager of a large construction firm, Gibson’s family relocated often when he was a child.  Gibson attended Pines Elementary School in Norfolk, Virginia, where his parents were disappointed by the instructors’ lack of support for him to read. Gibson’s father passed away at a restaurant while on a business trip while Gibson was still a young boy, less than a year into his time at Pines Elementary. Because his mother was unable to break the dreadful news to William, someone else did so.

Gibson “grew up in an America as unsettling and weird as anything J. G. Ballard ever dreamt,” according to Tom Maddox. After his father passed away, Gibson and his mother relocated from Norfolk to Wytheville. Gibson subsequently defined Wytheville as “a town where modernity had come to some degree but was greatly distrusted” and attributes the ensuing experience of sudden exile to the beginnings of his association with science fiction, his “native literary culture.” Gibson “wanted nothing more than to be a science fiction writer” when he was 12 years old.  At basketball-obsessed George Wythe High School, he endured a couple of fruitless years that were mostly spent in his room reading books and listening to music.  At age 13, he secretly bought a collection of Beat generation writers, which exposed him to the works of William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and Jack Kerouac.

The letter writer had a particularly strong impact, fundamentally altering Gibson’s ideas about the potential of science fiction literature. After his mother passed away when he was 18 years old, Gibson dropped out of school without receiving a diploma and spent a considerable amount of time by himself, traveling to California and Europe and becoming deeply involved in the counterculture. He made the decision to go to Canada in 1967 in order to “escape the Vietnam war conscription.” He candidly admitted to interviewers at his draught hearing that his life’s goal was to try every narcotic drug that existed.

According to Gibson, he “did not technically avoid the draught, since they never bothered selecting me” after the hearing, he went home and bought a bus ticket to Toronto before departing a week or two later. Gibson said that his choice to not serve was driven more by a desire to “sleep with hippy ladies” and partake in hashish in the biographical film No Maps for These Territories, released in 2000. He clarified the subject in an interview from 2008:

When I first began writing, I should not have given myself credit for draught avoidance. I washed up in Canada with the hope of dodging the draught, but because I wasn’t selected, I never had to make that decision. What I would have done if I had really been drafted is unknown to me. At that time, I wasn’t a neatly sealed package. I may have sobbed and left if someone had chosen me. Of course, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it.

In an interview with io9 on June 10, 2008, William GibsonGibson, a quiet, awkward youngster, was raised in a monoculture that he thought “very problematic”, actively resisted religion, and sought solace in reading science fiction and works by authors like William S. Burroughs and Henry Miller. Gibson’s mother threatened to send him to a boarding school when she became dissatisfied with his subpar academic performance; to her astonishment, he responded joyfully.

Gibson was dubbed the “noir prophet” of cyberpunk by The Sydney Morning Herald and The Guardian, respectively, in 1999. The Sydney Morning Herald declared Gibson “arguably the most influential author of the previous two decades.” Gibson has authored more than 20 short stories, 12 highly praised books, several pieces for important magazines, and numerous collaborations with musicians, filmmakers, and performers. Numerous fields, including academics, design, cinema, literature, music, cyberculture, and technology, have acknowledged the influence of his work.

William Gibson’s Phone Number, Email, Contact Information, House Address, and Social Profiles:

His then “chronically worried and depressed” mother, who had stayed in Wytheville following the loss of her husband, was unable to pay for his first option of Southern California, so she sent him to Tucson’s Southern Arizona School for Boys instead.  Although he hated the private boarding school’s rigidity, he was later appreciative of how it made him interact with others.  To the dismay of his professors, he received a score of 148 out of 150 on the written portion of the SAT, but just 5 out of 150 on the mathematical part.

Gibson and Bruce Sterling worked together on the alternative history book The Difference Engine, which became a significant work of the science fiction subgenre known as steampunk. These two books built on the plot of Neuromancer and completed the dystopian Sprawl trilogy.

Gibson wrote the Bridge trilogy of books in the 1990s, which addressed the sociological trends of postindustrial civilization, late capitalism, and near-future urban landscapes. Following the turn of the century and the 9/11 attacks, Gibson published a series of progressively realistic books set in a roughly modern setting, including Pattern Recognition, Spook Country, and Zero History. His name initially appeared on widely read bestseller lists thanks to these books. The Peripheral and Agency, two of his most recent books, reverted to a more overt engagement with technology and familiar science fiction themes.
