Warren Buffett Bio and Career:
Warren Edward Buffett, an American business tycoon, investor, and philanthropist, was born on August 30, 1930. He presently serves as Berkshire Hathaway’s chairman and CEO. He is among the most successful investors in the world, and as of October 2022, his net worth was over $95 billion, ranking him as the sixth-wealthiest person in the world. Buffett, the only son of Leila and Congressman Howard Buffett, was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1930. He was the second of Leila and Howard Buffett’s three children. Rose Hill Elementary School was where he started his studies
. Following the relocation of his family to Washington, D.C., where his father was elected to the first of four terms in the US Congress, Warren completed elementary school, attended Alice Deal Junior High School, and graduated from what was then Woodrow Wilson High School in 1947 with the senior yearbook entry “likes math; a future stockbroker.” Buffett wanted to bypass college and enter the workforce right away after graduating from high school and seeing success with his side business enterprises and investment endeavors, but his father disagreed. As a young boy, Buffett spent time in the customers’ lounge of a local stock brokerage close to his father’s own brokerage office, where he developed an interest in the stock market and trading. When Buffett was a little boy of 10, his father showed an interest in his education and once took him to see the New York Stock Exchange.
At the age of eleven, he purchased three shares of Cities Service Preferred for himself and three additional shares for his sister, Doris Buffett. Warren delivered Washington Post newspapers at the age of 15 and earned more than $175 per month. He purchased a 40-acre farm operated by a tenant farmer while still in high school and made an investment in a company owned by his father. When he was 14 years old, he used his savings of $1,200 to purchase the land. Buffett had saved $9,800 by the time he graduated from college.
Buffett learned that Graham served on the GEICO insurance company board in 1951. He rode the train to Washington, D.C., where he pounded on the door of the GEICO corporate office until a custodian let him in. He met the vice president of GEICO there, Lorimer Davidson, and the two spent hours talking about the insurance industry. After barely fifteen minutes, Davidson would go on to become Buffett’s lifetime friend and a significant influence, and he would later reflect that Buffett was an “amazing man” to him. Buffett wanted to work on Wall Street but was discouraged from doing so by both his father and Ben Graham. He offered to do Graham’s work for nothing, but Graham declined.
After moving back to Omaha, Buffett started working as a stockbroker and enrolled in a Dale Carnegie public speaking school. He felt competent enough to instruct an “Investment Principles” night class at the University of Nebraska-Omaha after using what he had learned. His students were more than twice his age on average. He made the disastrous side investment of buying a Sinclair petrol station around this time.
Buffett wed Susan Thompson in Dundee Presbyterian Church in 1952. They welcomed Susan Alice as their first child the following year. Buffett agreed to work for Benjamin Graham’s partnership in 1954. His beginning pay was $121,000. Walter Schloss was a close collaborator of his there. Graham was a strict employer.
After assessing the trade-off between a stock’s price and its actual value, he was adamant that stocks offer a significant margin of safety. The Buffetts welcomed Howard Graham, their second child, in the same year. Benjamin Graham ended his partnership and retired in 1956. With about $174,000 in personal funds at the time, Buffett founded Buffett Partnership Ltd.
Buffett enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in 1947. He wanted to concentrate on his business endeavors, but his father pushed him to join. Warren spent two years there as a student and joined the fraternity Alpha Sigma Phi. When he was 19 years old, he transferred to the University of Nebraska and earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration there.
Buffett enrolled at Columbia Business School at Columbia University after being turned down by Harvard Business School and finding that Benjamin Graham was a professor there. In 1951, he graduated with a Master of Science in economics from Columbia. Buffett attended the New York Institute of Finance after graduation. Since 1970, Buffett has been chairman and the company’s largest shareholder.
The “Oracle” or “Sage” of Omaha has been referred to as him by the international press. Despite his enormous wealth, he is renowned for his personal austerity and dedication to value investment. Buffett is a generous man who has promised to donate 99 percent of his wealth to charitable causes, principally through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Together with Bill Gates, he established The Giving Pledge in 2010, whereby millionaires promise to donate at least half of their wealth.

As a sophomore in high school, Buffett and a friend spent $25 on an old pinball machine, which they installed in the neighborhood barbershop.
