Vera Miles Bio and Career:
Vera Miles was born on August 23, 1929, in Boise City, Oklahoma, to parents Thomas and Bernice Ralston. Her parents named her Vera Miles. She was the youngest of three children. She relocated to Wichita after spending her formative years in Pratt, Kansas, but Pratt was her hometown. She began working for Western Union as an operator typewriter during the evenings, and she began working at the YMCA cafeteria during the mornings to serve breakfast.
She received her diploma from both Wichita North High School and Wichita High School in 1947. A manager at a modeling agency persuaded her to compete in a beauty pageant, and she did so as a result of his encouragement. She triumphed in the pageant and went on to compete for the title of Miss Wichita in 1948. Later on, in that same year, she competed in the Miss America pageant and went on to win the titles of Miss Wichita and Miss Kansas.
She finished in third place overall in the competition. Vera Miles relocated to Los Angeles in 1950 with the intention of launching a career in the entertainment industry. However, she was only able to secure supporting roles in films and television series. In the musical “Two Tickets to Broadway,” she was cast in the role of a chorus girl (1951). Because there was already another Vera Ralston working in the field at the time, she made the decision to use the surname of her husband, which was Miles.
Her first acknowledged role was in the romantic comedy ‘The Rose Bowl Story,’ which she starred in later on in her career. The following year, in 1953, she starred in “The Charge at Feather River,” in which she played the role of Jennie McKeever, a woman who was being held captive by Indians. In the film “Tarzan’s Hidden Jungle,” which was released in 1955, she co-starred with Gordon Scott and played Jane, Tarzan’s potential love interest.
At this point, she was working for Warner Bros. under the terms of a contract. She had also played the role of an emotionally troubled bride in the pilot episode of the television series “Alfred Hitchcock Presents,” in which she appeared. In 1956, Miles portrayed the female lead role in the western directed by John Ford and titled “The Searchers.” Other films she appeared in during this year include “23 Steps to Baker Street” and “The Wrong Man,” the latter of which was directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
After the completion of this film, she was given a contract with Hitchcock for a period of five years and was referred to as Grace Kelly’s replacement. She was supposed to play a part in the movie “Vertigo,” but she ended up losing the part to Kim Novak because of production delays and because she became pregnant during the course of the filming. Hitchcock made the decision to keep working with Miles despite the negative reception the film received from audiences at the box office.

Miles was offered the part of Lila Crane in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho in 1960, and it would prove to be the defining performance of her career. Her character, played by Janet Leigh, is a woman who travels across the country in pursuit of her sister and has a terrifying run-in with Norman Bates along the way (played by Anthony Perkins). She starred in the film “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence” at the beginning of the year 1962, which marked her comeback to John Ford’s films.
In addition to that, she had a recurring role on a television show. In the television series ‘Laramie’ from the 1960s, she portrayed the role of Annie Andrews. She also had roles in episodes of “The Twilight Zone” and “Riverboat,” a western television series. She later appeared on two episodes of “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour,” one in 1962 and the other in 1965. These episodes aired, respectively, in 1962 and 1965.
She was a familiar face on television throughout the decade of the 1960s, with recurring roles on shows such as ‘The Fugitive’ and ‘The Outer Limits,’ ‘The Eleventh Hour,’ ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,’ ‘Burke’s Law,’ and ‘Ironside.’ She also had guest starring roles in shows such as ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,’ In 1965, she had a recurring role as a supporting character on the television show ‘My Three Sons,’ in which she appeared in three episodes.
During the same year, she had a role in the television series ‘I Spy’ alongside Bill Cosby. Prior to her return to Walt Disney Studios, she had a recurring role on the television show “Rawhide” alongside Clint Eastwood. Miles appeared in a number of additional films, including “Follow Me, Boys!” (1966), which was produced by Walt Disney, and “Hellfighters” (1968). She was also a cast member in the movie ‘The Green Berets,’ but Warner Bros. opted not to include her portions in the movie because they wanted to increase the amount of action in the movie.
Her performances during the 1970s were as diverse and bountiful, including her role as an ex-girlfriend of the investigator in the television series ‘Cannon,’ in which she also made two guest appearances later on in the series. ‘Columbo,’ ‘Hawaii Five-O,’ ‘The Streets of San Francisco,’ and ‘Fantasy Island’ are among the numerous works that she has produced. She had a contract to portray the wife of the President of the United States in the 1977 film titled “Twilight’s Last Gleaming,” but the director, Robert Aldrich, had to delete her sequences because he thought the movie was too long.
In the sequel “Psycho II,” which was released in 1983, Miles reprised the part that brought her fame, that of Lila Crane. She was one of the two stars from the first film that returned for the sequel. She played a significant role in both films. Richard Franklin, an Australian director, was the one in charge of helming this project. She continued to make regular appearances in movies and television programs throughout the early 1980s, although those appearances began to taper down later on.
She had the films “Brainwaves” (1982), “The Initiation” (1984), and “Into the Night” to her credit (1985). During the 1980s, she had several appearances on television, including episodes of “The Love Boat” (1982–1984) and “Hotel” (1984-1987). In addition, she appeared as a guest three times on the television series “Murder, She Wrote.” Her very last part, which she played for the very last time in this series, was the last one she ever had on television. Her final performance on the big screen was in the 1995 movie “Separate Lives.” After this, she went into retirement.
