Tony Baxter Bio and Career:
Tony Wayne Baxter, who was born on February 1, 1947, is a former senior vice president of creative development at Walt Disney Imagineering. In this role, he was in charge of developing concepts for attractions all around the globe and supervising their construction. On the same day that he turned 66 years old, he made the announcement that he would be leaving his job as a full-time employee to work as a consultant on a part-time basis.
He worked for the corporation for a total of 47 years, during which time he supervised the creation of a number of modern Disney theme park attractions, including Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Star Tours, Splash Mountain, The Indiana Jones Adventure, and Journey Into Imagination, among others. At the age of 17, Baxter obtained his first job at Disneyland Park in 1965, working as an ice cream scooper on Main Street, United States of America. During the course of his job in the park, he was responsible for a wide variety of tasks.
After some time, he came to the notice of WED Enterprises (now known as Walt Disney Imagineering). After 24 years of service to the firm, he was promoted to the position of senior vice president of creative development at Walt Disney Imagineering. Prior to this promotion, he had worked his way up through the ranks of the company. His work may be seen in Walt Disney World, Disneyland Paris, and Disneyland, where he oversaw the construction of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, as well as the renovation of Fantasyland and Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
Tony Baxter, who was 8 years old when Disneyland first opened, has had an interest in the theme park ever since it first did business. Before starting work at the theme parks, he had an internship with Imagineering. The Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln attraction had just opened at Disneyland Park at this period. After seeing the presentation, Baxter was immediately enthralled by Disney’s innovative engineering. He began his Disney career by working in the parks, first selling popcorn and ice cream and then moving on to other attractions to broaden his knowledge of the company.
At the time, Baxter was enrolled at the California Polytechnic State University in Pomona. He came up with a concept for a Mary Poppins ride as part of his senior thesis, and he later presented it to WED Enterprises by way of a buddy who was linked there. WED Enterprises was so impressed with Baxter’s work that they extended an invitation to him to return for a second tour of the firm.
During this tour, they demonstrated the responsibilities of the job in addition to the ideas that they were actively developing. Baxter returned home after the trip that day thinking about a new line of work; as a direct consequence, he changed his professional path and enrolled in a new school. After receiving his diploma from Santa Ana High School in 1965, he first enrolled at Cal Poly Pomona with the intention of majoring in landscape architecture.
However, he quickly changed his mind and moved on to California State University in Long Beach to pursue a degree in theatre design. During this time, Baxter worked on his senior thesis, which he had been working on during his last year of college. As part of this assignment, he compiled a portfolio that included ideas that he had for attractions that might be found at Disneyland. Baxter received his degree in 1969 from California State University, Long Beach.
Tony Baxter Profile-
Awards:
The first version of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad debuted at Disneyland on September 2, 1979, and Walt Disney World’s version debuted exactly one year later. It was the first attraction to be constructed in Disneyland that Walt Disney had absolutely nothing to do with, and both Tony Baxter and his mentor Claude Coats were responsible for its design. The site upon which Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was constructed was once home to Walt’s first ride, Nature’s Wonderland.
However, due to declining attendance, tourists no longer enjoyed this attraction. The original versions of both Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris were launched in 1987 and 1992, respectively. In 1983, under Baxter’s direction, the newly renovated Fantasyland opened to the public. It includes redesigning all of the structures to give the appearance of a Bavarian village rather than a Renaissance style.
In addition to that, it included the inclusion of a walk-through set inside the interior of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, which contained dioramas depicting moments from the animated picture. The new Fantasyland that Baxter oversaw was filled with intricate elements and was the section of the park that had the most cutting-edge technology for its time period.
The first ride on Splash Mountain opened in 1989. While Baxter was sitting in traffic on his way to work, he had an inspiration for the ride that would become Splash Mountain. Around the same time, another attraction at Disneyland called America Sings was going to be discontinued owing to the low number of guests who visited it.
Splash Mountain was initially Baxter’s concept, but he ended up incorporating the Audio-Animatronics characters from America Sings into it (which was originally going to be titled Zip-a-Dee River Run). Baxter said that in an earlier Walt Disney movie, the Song of the South, there was a song with the title “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah,” which he matched with the animatronics that had been moved from America Sings. After that, he put together what is now known as Splash Mountain by assembling the sound effects, the mechanisms, and the log flume track.
Over four hundred Imagineers contributed to the creation of Indiana Jones Adventure, which was unveiled on March 4, 1995. Baxter served as one of the primary supervisors of the project and was in charge of his own group of one hundred workers. They were in charge of developing the kilometer-long track that was constructed over the parking lot that once housed Eeyore, in addition to the other ideas that were conceived for each individual chamber in the ride.
