About (Tennys Sandgren– Biography)

A first-round loss to Gilles Simon ended Sandgren’s 2017 campaign early in the new year in Pune. After that, he fell to Casper Ruud in the second round of the Auckland Open qualifying tournament. After Kyle Edmund withdrew, Sandgren was given a lucky loser’s entrance into the tournament’s main draw. Hyeon Chung, the winner of the first Next-Generation ATP Finals in Milan, Italy two months before, knocked him out in the first round of the main competition in three sets. Sandgren defeated Jeremy Chardy in straight sets to open his Australian Open campaign. The win over 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka, the ninth seed, in the second round was his first over a Top 10 player.

Sandgren’s first five-set encounter came after a win against Maximilian Marterer in the third round. Thiem was world No. 5 at the time. In the quarterfinals, he was defeated in straight sets by Chung Yun. World No. 188 Facundo Bagnis defeated No. 1 seed, Tennys Sandgren, in the first round of qualification for the Argentina Open, 1–6, 2–6. Second round exits at Rio Open and Brasil Open; Indian Wells; Miami; and Indian Wells; all came after his win in the first round at Indian Wells.

Sandgren made his ATP World Tour debut at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships, where he lost in the final against Steve Johnson. On April 16, 2018, he broke into the top 50, attaining a career-high ranking of World No. 47. Sandgren was knocked out of the Monte Carlo Open in the first round by Philipp Kohlschreiber. Malek Jaziri beat him in straight sets in Barcelona’s opening round, too. Sandgren lost in straight sets to Denis Shapovalov at the Madrid Open after falling in the first round of the Estoril Open to Frances Tiafoe. This was Sandgren’s fourth straight first-round loss. Sandgren made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the Geneva Open before losing to world No. 177 Hubert Hurkacz in the opening round of the French Open.

In the doubles tournament, he was eliminated in the first round after falling to his partner in straight sets. Sandgren lost in straight sets to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the first round of Wimbledon, winning just six games in the process. Sandgren upset Viktor Troicki in straight sets in the U.S. Open first round before falling to Novak Djokovic in four sets in the second round. Sandgren won the Auckland Open in January, his first ATP Tour triumph. On January 14, 2019, he earned a career-high singles rating of World No. 41.

Although Sandgren won the tournament, he went on a nine-match losing streak on the tour, which he ultimately stopped at Wimbledon, when he reached the fourth round before losing to Sam Querrey. It was followed by quarterfinal appearances at The Open and The U.S. Open, where he fell short of the final 16. A damaged toe sidelined him for the remainder of the season, and his rating dipped outside the top 50 once again. Sandgren made it to the Australian Open quarterfinals for the second time in 2020, losing to Roger Federer in five sets after holding (and wasting) seven match points.

As a result of his November 2020 positive test for COVID-19, Sandgren’s January 2021 positive test was also ruled “non-infectious” and granted entry into Australia to compete in the Australian Open, which he lost in the opening round. Sandgren has earned the right to compete for the United States in the Summer Olympic Games in 2020. In singles, he was eliminated in the first round, but in doubles, he went all the way to the finals before falling to eventual champions Mate Pavi and Nikola Mukti. The duo went on to lose in the bronze medal match to Marcus Daniell and Michael Venus of New Zealand.
